Dan Herbert was proud to present Janet Stead with her sixth Paul Harris Fellow. Once you have made a donation of $1000.00 U.S. to the Rotary Foundation, you become a Paul Harris Fellow. With each following $1000.00 you become a multi-Paul Harris,  the status denoted by the stones on the award pin. Janet Stead  was presented with her 6th Paul Harris Fellow as shown by the ruby stone. We are very proud of our member, Janet Stead, and grateful for all the work she does on behalf of both the local and international communities, through her financial and volunteer work with Rotary.

President Chris introduced our newest member Mike Williams to deliver his Classification Talk.

Mike began by explaining that he was born in Toronto and had moved to Ottawa by the time he was 8 years old. He joined Cubs, part of Boy Scouts and stayed with that organisation for 33 years.

When Mike was 13, they moved to Burlington and then on to St. Catherines. He ran a Globe & Mail paper route and later when he learned to drive, he ran a milk delivery service.

His family then moved to Agincourt when he was 17. And that is where he met the love of his life... Bev Williams. They were married at an early age.

Mike studied at Centennial College and later at Ryerson studying Business and Computer Programming. His first real (computer) job was working for The Independent Order of Foresters and he later migrated to Wrigley's Gum on an accounts receivable program.

Later he began working for Burger Chef and was offered to open the Crock & Block Restaurant on Bayfield Street in Barrie. When he was offered a promotion to Toronto he said "No thanks", and began working for Willard Kinsey in Barrie at Lakeview Restaurant. He was involved in all kinds of catering with the company and Mike pursued arranging for liquor licensing which did not fit into the next owner's plans for Lakeview.

Mike & Bev had a son and daughter by now, so he took a job with Work Wear Corporation. He became active in contract negotiations for the employees and arranged for the first pension plan for the workers in the organization.

Mike won several sales awards including a trip to San Francisco & New Orleans. With his new found travel skills in hand, he was able to serve as Travel Coordinator for 44 scouts, leaders and parents to the World Boy Scout Jamboree near Sydney, Australia.

Eventually Mike obtained his trucking license and was involved in driving transport freight liners all through the United States and Canada. However, he found that this vocation kept him away from family for extended periods, and he became involved in organizing truck rodeos (obstacle courses for trucks).

He is now retired and living on Pinecone Lane with fellow member and bedmate Bev.

Mike looks forward to assisting our club in any way he can. He has certainly demonstrated many of his talents with club initiatives already.

Congratulations Mike! It is great to have you on our team. A very entertaining and informative talk. Glad to know you better.

On the weekend of February 21 - 23, 2014 our club partnered with The Rotary Clubs of Orillia in hosting University of Toronto students from other countries. These students live and study in downtown Toronto and rarely (if ever) get the opportunity to experience life in a smaller Canadian community. They are hosted by Rotary members locally and enjoy a weekend of snowshoeing, cross country skiing, ice fishing and hockey. Cultural diversity and increased knowledge about Canada is always achieved.
