Today’s Program

Dr. Michael Beck gave a talk on “The Healing Power of Touch” (retitled just prior to his presentation to “Good Touch and Bad Touch”) .

He began with a case study where many young children in a facility practicing sterile, non-contact care, died prematurely through psychological neglect, and how their life expectancy dramatically increased when caregivers adopted more “hands-on” practices.

Mike described other studies illustrating that, in general, people who were raised in loving homes, with a great deal of positive emotional contact, fared much better in later life than those deprived of such a caring, early environment.

Emphasizing the importance of caring, parental guidance in younger life, Mike cited several sources confirming that many, if not most, who were neglected or abused in their youth, will neglect or abuse their own children.

Referring to current events, Mike cited positive and negative aspects of recent stories involving Trump, Oprah, and the Kavanaugh/Ford controversy. He also described the concept of objective identification, a psychological process whereby the subject assimilates an aspect, property, or attribute of the other and is transformed wholly or partially by the model that the other provides.

Mike concluded with an expanded Q&A session, including a soliloquy by Dr. Gujavarty on the physiological and socio-economic impact of early-stage parental abuse and neglect.

Next Week’s Meeting

No formal program is scheduled for our next regular meeting on Wednesday, October 10th. Unless a surprise speaker emerges, we will hold a Fellowship Meeting where we’ll discuss results of the day’s board meeting.
