President's Address

What a huge month it has been!!  Our first international project started with great vigor and success.

As a club we introduced the buddy system which was well accepted by the members.  For those who are yet to connect with their buddy it doesn't take long but the fellowship goes a long way.  We have even started to see some projects develop between buddies.

We have also reached that time 6 months in and members are asking what it is we are doing as a club.  Following the Namayingo project and the Asia Water Safety TTT Tour topped up by the 2nd Dip members are asking what is happening in their region and is this journey for me.

I cannot answer for you, but I can say to reap the rewards you need to sow the seeds.  We are looking for projects now for the next 12 months.  The concept note is a simple document giving everyone the opportunity to share ideas.  There are 5 active members at the moment working hard to meet the needs of the club and the members.

The success of any water safety & drowning prevention project is about people coming together to make the impossible possible.  Zero drowning can only work if we work together slowly, patiently, touching every corner of the globe to ensure every child can swim before they finish primary school.

We are a team of professional educators, and we are the brains trust that will get this vision over the line.  One thing Thailand taught me is that the world is ready for our club, and we need to be there to train the teachers and support learn to swim programs wherever they may be.

Charter President Eve Fraser
District Grant

In February we were approved for our second District Grant for AUD 5,000. The grant was used to pay for Swim Teaching qualifications on our Asia Tour 2023.

The team of 5 was finalised for the Tour as follows:

President Eve - Leader
Rhiannon Kokmar - Trainer
Stacy Gower -  Team Support
Stuart Fraser - Admin
Natthasak Thawudom (Storm) - in country Trainer and Program Co-ordinator

Asia Tour 2023

The team travelled first to Chiang Mai mid February. All members, including honorary member Stuart, paid their own return flights. Chiang Mai International RC provided accommodation for the team and meals during training.

29 Swim Australia Teacher and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) courses were delivered. 17 Teacher of Babies courses were also delivered and 11 for Teacher of Learners With a Disability.

We did a short presentation to the Chiang Mai International RC whilst we were there and received a banner from President Viki.  We presented the club with a gift of a boomerang as a symbol that we will return to support their children's water safety program.

The team was invited to an awards night and MP received an award for remarkable service to the region.

We had a couple of days to catch up on the local sights and we want to thank our member and exceptional tour guide Storm for his hospitality and generosity during our tour.  Also the pool owner and program supporter Pomme - thank you for all the food and opening your home to the team and sharing your stories with us.

The team arrived in Phuket after Chiang Mai with a sense of loss at leaving new friends but also great excitement about what we could achieve again.

RC Patong Beach provided the accommodation, transport and food during training, JD Pools provided their pool and facilities.

In Phuket we trained teachers from Koh Samui (RC Samui-Phangan) and Hua Hin (RC Royal Hua Hin) and Phuket (RC Patong Beach).

25 Swim Australia Teacher & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) courses were delivered.

The team was invited to a meeting at the RC Patong Beach and MP presented our club to the members which was well received.  All team members received a club banner.  MP presented a boomerang to club President Best as a token of support for their generosity and support for the water safety program.

We want to thank Bill Trempus from RC Patong Beach for co-ordinating all the facets of this training.  Bill and his wife Nitcha stayed at the hotel with the team during the training to ensure we had everything we needed.  He also provided the bus with the mirrored ceiling to get us to and from the pool. Hmmm was that going a step too far?  I think not it was very comfortable.  We also want to thank Dr Johan and his wife for opening their home to us and his ongoing support over the last 5 years to keep this program going.

We would also be remiss if we didn't thank Khun Gob and Khun Mint for their work to get the program started 5 years ago and keeping it alive during COVID.  Great job ladies.  You did not start this as a swim school with swimming teachers.  You stepped up and took the reigns and have taught over 3,000 children since the program began and that is remarkable.

The team also left books to help train new teachers in both locations and the 2nd Dip was able to provide swimmers, caps & goggles for the programs.
Presentations

President Eve presented at CMIRC and RC Patong Beach. Both presentations were received with enthusiasm and much interest.

Please let Eve know if you are doing any presentations over the next 3 to 6 months.

Guest Speakers & Meetings

We were very fortunate to have Rotary Club of Msasa, Zimbabwe Club President Tatenda Tavaziva attend a meeting to tell us his story and experience of Rotary. He was gifted a scholarship to attend University by a Rotarian on the condition that he give back in the future, and that is what he is now doing. We also had a very informative and inspiring RI Talk from Rotary Peace Fellowship, Raman, who told us several stories about participants he has been able to help through the program.

Our February meeting chair, Phil, did a great job and provided some interesting meetings and 2 great guest speakers.

Our Board meeting was unable to go ahead due to lack of attendance. We want to thank the meeting chair, Michelle, for stepping up and Phil for supporting her.  This is an important part of our club governance and we need to step up if we are to move on to bigger and better projects in the future.
