Tours Sun City West Helping Hands
By AG Bob Murray

Our meeting started 15 minutes early in preparation for the Tour of Sun City West Foundation's Helping Hands.  The tour was led by Kathy Chandler, Helping Hands Manager, and accompanied by Patti Rowan SCW Foundation Executive Director.

Helping hands provides, free of charge, several items ranging from roll-away beds to wheel chairs and everything in between.

To check out equipment, SCW HH require proof of residency; i.e., a Recreation Card from Sun City West residents, a CAM card from Sun City Grand and a badge from AZ Traditions.

Helping Hands has a large warehouse with stored items from floor to ceiling.  When Items are returned they check and cleaned for the next person.  During the tour, we were treated to a demonstration of the process of cleaning a returned roll-away bed.  A steam machine is use to clean the bed which removes all threats insuring a clean and sanitized bed for the next user.

Helping Hands performs their own maintenance on all items.  When an item no longer has a useful life it is disassembled for parts, any unusable part are discarded while the good parts are stored for future use.

All of the items are donated or purchased with donations.  Helping Hands is fully self-supporting with donations which includes the paid employees.  Approximately 25% of the employees are paid while the remaining are volunteers.

Karen & Patti were very excited for a new software program which was installed this month.  The are in the process of testing the program which should prove to be much better and more accurate then the paper & pencil method previously used.

Helping Hands is a recipient of SCW Rotary's Charitable Funds.
