Members of Rotary Club of Sedona Red Rocks and their family members joined together on Sunday, February 28 for the club’s first community service project of 2021.

The project, located at the Friends of the Sedona Library’s used book store at 3270 White Bear Road in Sedona included cleaning up the property’s landscape, laying weed block material, spreading recycled rubber mulch, planting low maintenance evergreen bushes and installing a drip watering system

Red Rocks Rotary partnered with Friends of the Sedona Library and a private donor to cover the cost of materials. The crew of ten Rotarians and three family members along with Sedona Public Library executive director Judy Poe provided the labor.

The goal of the project was not only to improve the appearance of the property but to target weed and dust abatement while incorporating low water usage.

Friends of the Sedona Library opened the used book store at this location in June 2018. The house, owned by Sedona Public Library, was converted from a former rental specifically to house the Friends’ used book sale operation. The store is operated entirely by volunteers and all of its inventory is comprised of donations. It generates proceeds of about $50,000 a year which is contributed to Sedona Public Library to help provide enhanced library services such as children’s, teen and adult programs, collection development and modern technologies that might otherwise not be available to library patrons.

Red Rocks Rotary is planning to incorporate a second phase of landscape improvements at the store in conjunction with Rotary’s “Week of Service” that will run April 18 through April 24, 2021. Rotary clubs across Arizona and the United States will be participating in projects to improve their communities.
