Anthem Rotary announces naming of Scholarship Fund in honor of Fellow Rotarian

On Friday, June 18th the Anthem Rotary Board of Directors announced that the annual scholarship fund that we have awarded will now be named the Edward F. Varney Memorial Scholarship Fund. Several members visited Ed at his home on Saturday to inform him of the naming of the fund in his name. Ed was a long time Rotarian and very instrumental in the establishment and annual work done to award scholarships to eligible graduating High School Seniors in the Anthem and surrounding areas. Every year Anthem Rotary would award five $1,000 scholarships. This past year we were very fortunate to be able to fund scholarships to all 18 qualified applicants and will be announcing the names very shortly at a reception for the winners. Ed was so excited to hear the news of the naming of the scholarship in his honor, but more importantly that the hard work fundraising by the club had enabled us to award 18 scholarships this year.

Sadly, Ed passed away early Sunday morning June 20th but his work will go on forever through this fund.

Anyone wishing to donate to this fund can do so by mailing a check to:

Homeless Youth Connection

Anthem Rotary Homeless Youth Connection (HYC)

The Department of Education Homeless Education Office reported 31,097 children were homeless throughout the state. The Anthem Rotary serves 4 high schools (Boulder Creek, Sandra Day O’Connor, Barry Goldwater and Mayer High Schools) over 75 youth have been identified as homeless. HYC serves homeless youth ages 13 to19. These students face numerous barriers to education, keeping many of them from completing high school or achieving post-secondary education. This affects a young person's future ability to live independently, and results in undeveloped learning and communication skills, leading youth to have future difficulty integrating into society.

Currently, there are limited social services in the North Valley.

Unaccompanied homeless youth, often referred to as "youth on their own" is the most difficult subpopulation of homeless to quantify. Many homeless youth do what they have to do in order to survive, such as sleeping in cars, bartering sex for shelter, "couch surfing" from one friend's house to another, or residing with abusive family members who threaten to "kick them out." Without real support, such youth may find themselves in and out of jail, dependent on the welfare system, or living their life in a chronic state of crisis.

HYC is a preventive measure to the potential negative life experiences above.  HYC of Anthem Rotary serves homeless youth ages 13-19 who are attending local high schools. Youth are provided with basic necessities, hygiene kits, food cards, thumb drives, clothing items and special requested items.

Even grown ups need a buddy to swim! A special thank you to the Anthem Rotary Club for your wonderful visit. We appreciate it!

Done-In-A-Day Projects

Here's an update on a recent Done-In-A-Day project and a future project.
Saturday - January 30, 2016
A hard-working group of 35 (Rotarians, family members, Interact members and even a soon-to-be-inducted Rotary member and her spouse) joined together to help pack emergency food boxes (EFBs) at St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance in Phoenix.

In less than 2 hours, this dynamic team ‘packed and stacked’ 1,200 EFBs.  This represents the handling of 20,160 lbs of food!  Each EFB contains the non-perishable product (cereal, canned fruits and vegetables, rice, shelf-stable milk, juice, etc.) to assist a family of four with meals for 3 days.  When distributed to families facing the challenges of hunger, the box is supplemented with fresh produce, dairy, bakery items and meat as available.

Saturday, March 19
Diamond Canyon Elementary School in Anthem will be the site of our next “Done-in-a-Day” project – the painting of a giant map of the United States in an approximately 35’w X 36’l area on their campus.  Take a look at pages 20-21 of the December 2015 issue of The Rotarian magazine to see what we’ll be doing.  Work sign-up sheet coming soon.

Special Drive to Raise Funds For Animal Victims of Joplin Tornado

Posted by Stan Rose on Jun 26, 2011
A special drive is being initiated to raise money for the Humane Society of Joplin, Missouri. The funds will be used to treat pets that were injured or displaced by the devastating EF-5 tornado that struck there on May 22nd.

Karen Aquino, Director of the shelter was recently contacted by the Anthem Rotary to see what their needs were and what the Rotary could do to ease their burden.

“Our primary need is for money to buy the medications we need to treat the pets that are recovering from injuries,” she said. The Humane Society is currently caring for some 600 animals. “Many are suffering from painful traumas, such as broken limbs and need specific types of pain medications. Others are recovering from infections”, she added.

The fundraiser is being targeted to a select group: veterinary clinics and hospitals in Anthem and New River.

“We didn’t want to approach the community at large for this fundraiser because we rely on their help for our major fundraising events in the spring (our golf tournament) and the fall (the Rotary Roundup)”, says Stan Rose, the Anthem Rotarian who is spearheading the drive. “We are targeting the veterinarians because they, most of all, can appreciate the cost the Joplin Humane Society is facing.”

Results of the fundraising effort will be made public in mid-July.

Rotary Cited for International Cooperation

Dear Past Presidents:
Since it was you during your year as president who helped to realize the Mosiro water project (Kenya) with the contributions from your clubs, I wish to let you know that we are successfully finalizing that project.

The accompanying picture and letter from DG Jim Green appropriately recognizes the RC of Sedona for its leadership role in spearheading that project.

We could not have done this project without the generosity of the some 27 clubs in RD 5490.
Thanks once more for joining with the district water committee and your RD 5490 clubs so as to bring water to the 10,000 Maasai inhabitants in the Mosiro district.
