Ken spent his career in Indo China, the Middle East, Palestine and in Viet Nam.  Upon planned retirement he was asked to head the World Food Prize entity. John Ruan and John Crystal were instrumental in bringing Norman Borlaug and his great agricultural humanitarian work to the forefront.  Norman Borlaug is one of three persons receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal.  The others were Martin Luther King and Ellie Wiesel.

Norman Borlaug's acclaim is that he worked with crops in underdeveloped countries such that the crops were able to resist rust disease and provided food sources for the countrymen. In Pakistan and India he helped alleviate weeds allowing for the green revolution to take hold.  Today, the World Food Prize Day is held at our capital in Des Moines with dignitaries from over 70 countries attending the ceremony.  In addition there is the 3 day symposium...the Borlaug Dialog that is held to engage over 150 teachers and students in thought and discussion about burgeoning world food issues.  Norman Borlaug will be honored in Washington DC with a ceremony dedicating his statue... noting him as the individual who saved more lives than any other person who has ever lived.  Quite a fabulous Iowan!!
