This month has been a mix between winter, spring and finally summer.

I have done so much this past month and I am so thankful for everything I could do.

It started with me celebrating my 17th birthday and going to Toronto with my host family to watch "& Juliet" at the Royal Alexandra Theatre.

I also learned lots of farming stuff as I am living on an actual farm now!

I planted brussel sprouts and transplanted tomatoes. I also participated in a rhubarb workshop and a farm tour.

One of my highlights this month was petting the baby goats because they're super cute. I want to take one back home with me, but my host dad said I'm not allowed to.

I'm looking forward to next month when the weather is going to be extra nice. 

I have been lucky enough to have done a lot with Rotary in the month of May.  The first event I had was a rally where people from all around came with their cars to participate in a race/scavenger hunt around the local area. In the rally you have to navigate with a map we provide to reach checkpoints, using your phone is not allowed. My job was to hand out the different maps for the different sections of the race, as well as waving the flag for a staggered start for each car. Overall I had a very enjoyable experience seeing different local sites and businesses at the checkpoints.  

This past weekend the Rotary Youth Exchange program took all the students to Disneyland Paris. Earlier this year we sold raffle tickets to fundraise for the trip. We went from May 22-24 - on Friday we went to Disneyland for the day. On Saturday we went to a museum and walked around Paris. Sunday we went home on the high speed train. It's always great to see all the other exchange students.

On May 7 we heard from David Nairn, who after 26 years as Artistic Director of Theatre Orangeville now serves the theatre in the role of Artistic Director Emeritus. This role allows David to further develop and promote programs such as Creative Partners On Stage.

Since 2003, Theatre Orangeville has stood proudly beside partners at Community Living Dufferin to provide unique theatrical programming that celebrates the abilities of participants.

Creative Partners On Stage actors work with directors and choreographers to develop two original scripts each year, fully supported by Orangeville Theatre's professional production team and the accredited support workers from Community Living Dufferin.

There is nothing quite like Creative Partners On Stage anywhere in Canada and it happens at Theatre Orangeville.

On May 21 we had a great presentation from Jill and Dan from the Pine River Institute. Pine River Institute is a residential treatment centre and outdoor leadership program that supports youth and families struggling with addictive behaviours and mental health challenges. The extensive work they do both on and off campus is truly impressive.

Neil Orford, retired history teacher, fixture at Shelburne Remembrance Day ceremonies, and past speaker at Shelburne Rotary, is organizing a two week tour in November, 2026 of World War I and World War II sites in France and Belgium, including Remembrance Day at Juno Beach.

This tour is planned in conjunction with Orangeville Highlands Rotary for Rotarians and friends.
