Is winter over yet? That's been quite the January. Including a polar vortex! Really? Enough already!
As seen in this newsletter we welcome Michelle to Shelburne Rotary. Thank you Michelle for joining and wanting to get involved in community service.
Shelburne Rotary, with the support of Orangeville Rotary, is once again involved in Youth Exchange.
Now that Mike has been approved, after a qualification process, as our outbound student, we will profile him in a future newsletter. (Mike will find out where he is heading off to in February).
As we move into February we are beginning to plan our events for 2025. Events include both our service projects and fundraisers.

While Real moved to Mississauga some years ago to be closer to family, his heart is still with Shelburne and Shelburne Rotary.

food bank goal achieved
Shelburne Rotary congratulates the Shelburne Food Bank for reaching their fundraising goal for the new cargo van.
In July, 2024 the Food Bank and the Rotary Club of Shelburne celebrated the official launch of the fundraising campaign.
The goal was reached quicker than either organization thought possible, and it is a credit to all those who were able to donate to make this happen.
Shelburne Rotary is pleased to sponsor the van as a “Community Partner”.
rotary suupports: Hearts wide open for autism
Shelburne Rotary is proud to again support Hearts Wide Open for Autism. This year's funds are being donated to the Orangeville Wolves Special Program hockey team. The team is made up of people with intellectual disabilities ranging in age from 6 to 60. This organization provides the opportunity for those with Special Abilities to be included where they otherwise wouldn't be.
There is a significant number of children, young adults, and adults with Special Abilities living in Dufferin County.
WHAT we Heard: Orangeville OSPCA
On January 9, we heard from staff at the Orangeville Animal Centre, part of the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society. They described the broad range of programs and activities that they are involved in, including providing pet food to local food banks, mobile spay and neuter clinics, and education on the humane treatment of animals.
Subsequent to the presentation, the Rotary Club of Shelburne made a donation to support their work in keeping pets and people together in Dufferin County.
what we heard: international project update
On January 23 we heard an update regarding a project in Nepal that was supported by the Rotary Club of Shelburne, amongst many other donors.
The project invested in Indigenous women, allowing them to create a sustainable business by providing sewing machines and other infrastructure and supplies they needed to make their products, primarily baskets and reusable sanitary napkins. The resulting business provides the women with work and the community with needed products.
This International Grant project was initiated by Rotary Burlington and implemented by the host club in Nepal, the Rotary Club of Narayangarn.
member profile: Steve stringer
Steve Stringer has deep roots in the community. He is from a multi-generational local family, members of which first moved to the area in 1869. (He can still see the original family farm from his home).
Attending local school in Shelburne, he met his wife Darlene at Centre Dufferin and District High School (CDDHS). After high school, he worked with an electrician for ten years. In 1995 Steve started work at Honda in Alliston, retiring in 2023.
Through the years, he was part of different organizations including the Boy Scouts of Canada as a Cub and Cub leader. (His role was previously featured in one of our newsletters and in the Shelburne Free Press). He believes that joining Scouts gave him, and gives other children, an idea of what it is like to help people. As a result, when he retired, he wanted to help the community. He recognized what Rotary does in the community, with the variety of events we hold and charitable giving that we do. Steve joined Shelburne Rotary in January, 2024. He jumped in with both feet and can often be seen helping at the local Blood Donor Clinic and the Senior's Market. (And building our Santa Claus Parade float.) Steve also volunteers at the Shelburne Food Bank and occasionally at the Alliston District Humane Society.
Rotary's motto, "Service Above Self", aligns with Steve's personal mantra of helping others. Thank you Steve for your support to our community.
Rotary International's anniversary is celebrated on February 23. It was on that day in 1905 that Paul Harris and a group of fellow businessmen founded the first Rotary Club.
It wasn't much later, in 1938, that the Rotary Club of Shelburne was established to do good in the Shelburne community and around the world, working under the motto "Service Above Self".
