Labour Day Weekend already?
It was a month for Rotarians to have a break to re-energize and enjoy the last summer days of August.
That said, our club performed a service project on August 1, where we assembled over 150 backpacks for the Backpack Project.
And while Rotary had no regular meetings in August, work continued on planning for our Fall Food Drive and Pumpkinfest on October 12; selling our Christmas Wreaths and Garlands; beginning to collect goods for our Christmas Basket sales; and planning our fundraising Gala for November 16.

Last year’s International Plowing Match (IPM) is a distant memory but it was all brought back to top of mind on August 22 with a huge BBQ to celebrate the accomplishments of the IPM 2023.
Many Shelburne Rotarians spent countless hours planning, preparing and running several events at the Plowing Match and we were rewarded for our efforts at the celebratory BBQ.
Some of the money received from the IPM will be put toward two programs that are very important to the Shelburne community, the Backpack Project and the Hamper Program. These causes assist local families needing a little extra assistance with the expenses of back to school and the holiday season.
The organizers seem very pleased that profits from the IPM were distributed to many organizations in Dufferin County.
Thank you to the IPM and all the volunteers who help make this community a great place to live, work and play.

rotary supports - splash pad enhancements
In July, Shelburne Rotary made a donation to the Town for Splash Pad Enhancements such as chairs, benches, and tables.
Many have already been installed, including the Town's shade structure, with still more to be installed.
These additions provide much needed features for everyone who uses the Splash Pad, to enjoy some shade on a hot day and a place to rest from splashing around!
Thank you to all those who support Shelburne Rotary fundraisers, which allow us to support these types of causes.

Originally from Salt Spring Island, BC, Tegan Adams was first introduced to Rotary in high school where she made friends with exchange students from Brazil and Denmark.
In her second year at the University of British Columbia, she was elected president of the more than 100 member UBC-Vancouver Rotaract club. (Rotaract clubs bring together people ages 18 and older to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through service).
Tegan travelled with Rotary and family health ministries to Haiti to complete medical triage work and supported financing applications and deposits for a new water well and tree planting to occur near the Dalai Llama temple in Northern India.
After traveling to 58 countries, in 2021, Tegan decided to finally call Canada ‘home’.
She moved to Shelburne to enjoy the peaceful community where she has been working on different experiments in economics and the arts.
She is excited to join Shelburne Rotary and meet new people and participate in the community.
What is Rotary?
Last month we wrote about the Education and Literacy Area of Focus, and how Shelburne Rotary works to support education and literacy in our community.
This month, we want to discuss another Area of Focus: Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution.
Today, tens of millions of people are displaced by armed conflict or persecution. (We see and hear about it almost everyday or every night in the news).
Through our partnerships with several leading universities, Rotary Peace Fellows develop the skills to strengthen peace efforts, train local leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and support long-term peace building in areas affected by conflict.
Shelburne Rotary is proud to join other Rotary Clubs in our District to provide scholarships to three students in the Master of Peace and Conflict Studies program at the University of Waterloo. This professional degree takes 18 months to complete and provides graduates with the tools to mitigate conflict and help individuals and organizations build peace.
The Scholarship provides the resources to:
1. Train leaders, including potential youth leaders, to prevent and mediate conflict
2. Support peace-building in communities and regions affected by conflict
3. Support studies for career-minded professionals related to peace and conflict prevention/resolution
