Update from Paula Mompio in Spain

Hello!!

How are you? How is everything at home? Hope you are all doing okay in Iowa City. Here in Spain we’re in quarantine for the COVID-19, so everybody must stay home all time.

Everybody in my family is healthy and staying inside. As many friends in the US, I’m also studying from home online. The classes are quite different and professors still need to get comfortable with the programs we are using. They said that we’re probably not going back to normal classes until next year. But they still need to decide what will happen, so nothing’s determined yet. My mum and my dad are also working from home.

I thought it was gonna be worse for me, since I’m outside my house all day long. But actually it hasn’t been that bad. I get to play the ukelele more, do cooking recipes with my sister and work out a lot more. One of the main problem of staying home is that you’re closer to all the snacks and it’s easier to go to the fridge and grab something quick (more than once a day).

Apart from that, please stay safe. Follow all quarantine rules and only get out of you’re house if necessary. At first people in Spain wasn’t really paying attention to it and going out anyway and now we’re probably gonna have to stay home for another month if things don’t get better.

Hopefully this will be over soon.

Sending lots of hugs to everybody,
Paula

Those Hardest Hit Need Our Help – A Call to Action from Open Heartland

UPDATE: Mark Ruggeburg, President, Rotary Club of Iowa City Downtown has put up a challenge to match up to $1,000 in donations.

Coronavirus is changing our world and impacting us in ways we would have never anticipated a month ago.  But with the access to resources that each of has, we’ll weather the storm.  That is not the case for everyone living in Johnson County. Imagine not having a financial safety net, no income, and not qualifying for any government assistance during this health crisis.

There are at least ninety families, our neighbors with innocent children, whose futures are in severe jeopardy.  Open Heartland came to know these families last summer during our Mobile Home Community Play Dates.  You’ll remember the help we provided with school supplies and winter coats.  These are families who love their children and work hard at their hourly, no-benefits jobs. They’ve escaped impossible lives in Central America to now live the perilous lives of the undocumented.   Because of coronavirus, their small income has disappeared leaving them without money for food, medicine, and rent.

Please do what you can to help these families survive during this crisis.  Open Heartland will make sure that your donations (tax deductible) go to the families in most need.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Elizabeth Bernal, Theresa Burns, Mark Patton, Nancy Pacha, Deb Dunkhase
Checks can be mailed to:  Open Heartland,7 Wellesley Way, Iowa City, Iowa 52245

Happy Buck$

Peggy Deorge
I am happy to be returning to Iowa on Thursday [April 9].  I leave Florida on Wednesday equipped with masks, gloves, disinfectant wipes, food, water, a positive attitude and one small dog.  Looking forward to a time when we are able to meet again!

Karin Franklin
I want all my Rotary friends to know they are being wished Happy Birthday, individually, each day as I wash my hands, whether you have a birthday now or not.  I should be through the club any minute now!

Mark Patton
The Pattons got a new mixed up pup, Beau, yesterday.   For those who are archers, just call him Bow.

Margy Winkler
I have become a great aunt three times since the virus came.  All three babies seem to be doing well, and I think that's a positive worth a happy buck!  Or three, actually!

Liz Nichols
Happy Buck, one each Liz Nichols will contribute for the Wednesday Meals on Wheels schedule bringing 5 frozen meals to shut-in clients each week until this pandemic is over.  The route will be shared by  Liz and Paul Nichols and Karin Franklin with Jean Knepper as our backup.
Also throw into my last happy buck post a couple of happy bucks for Deb D. and Phil P for their Friday MOW route.  It is so important especially now to support those who are food insecure and shut in.

Vernette Knapp
# 1  Chris and I were very happy with our first Rotary Rodeo.  We hope more people will come on April 14th.
# 2  I now have three of my friends making masks.  I am happy they are because I do not have that skill.

Brian Adamec
Joke time.
Most members haven't heard this one:
How do you make a band stand?
Take away their chairs.

Why wouldn't the hockey player buy lunch for his friend?
Because he was a cheapskate.

Hey Phil...
Popsicle Pete here.
"My pile is bigger than your pile"! And this is after l tossed out a couple dozen.
Need to open your wallet a bit wider to catch up to old Pete here.

Deb Ockenfels
I'm happy that Kris' house is now listed with Urban Acres and ready to be shown.  I'm also happy because I can modify supplies I have to take the place of items that are sold out to keep making masks.

Hazel Seaba
My Oaknoll East apartment now has one window installed and is looking like an apartment.
