Announcements:
Dear Iowa City AM Rotary Club Members,
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to attend RYLA this summer. Even though I will not be able to attend due to the cancellation of the event to keep people safe, I am grateful for your generosity. I hope to be able to participate in a rotary sponsored event in the future.
Sincerely,
Anna Verry, Student, West High School
Nancy Pacha provided the following update on RYLA.
Our club is responsible for shepherding the West students only, although the noon club kindly pays for the extras we have not budgeted for so that all the public high schools send roughly the same number of students. Those seven West students who would have been at our August Rotary meeting to report on their experience are the following:
|
Anna Verry
|
Joseph Polyak
|
Nik Sung
|
|
Gus Elwell (RYE student)
|
Bena Kariuki

Helen Zhang

We have always offered the RYLA experience to sophomores and the WAS experience to juniors. There has been discussion about whether this year's students should be selected to go to RYLA next year, but that would mean we would not have any options for sophomores. I think I would rather offer them World Affairs and continue our sequence. I have been encouraging this year's RYLA students to consider WAS for next summer.
If RYLA promised to double the number of students we could send next summer, we could send this year's students and still have something for sophomores, but we know that will not happen. We always have a rough path to get the number the four area clubs can afford to send since RYLA sets a firm cap.
Happy Buck$
