Jean Robillard on UI Health Care and Presidential Search
Bob Downer introduced speaker Jean Robillard, vice president for Medical Affairs and current interim President at the University of Iowa. Robillard shared faces about UI Health Care’s size and scope, including that it is a $3.7 billion operation that integrates UI Hospitals, the Carver College of Medicine and UI Physicians. He cited several awards and honors earned by UIHC, discussed major projects like the new Children’s Hospital (to open in 2016), and addressed challenges. These include finding ways to fund the $30 million in new operating costs when the Children’s Hospital opens, which will come from finding efficiencies in other areas. He also shared details of the search to replace retiring UI President Sally Mason. Robillard leads the 21-person search committee, will select 3-4 candidates in August for campus visits, and will make recommendations to the Board of Regents in September, with a hiring decision expected soon thereafter. • President Bruce reminded Rotarians that the fiscal year ends June 30, so if you want to contribute to the Rotary Foundation and have it count this year, get your contribution in.

  • Bruce also shared that another successful Ronald McDonald House golf outing is in the books. Over 14 years, the event has raised more than $625,000 for the house.

  • LaDonna Wicklund shared that the Alzheimer’s Association wants the goal of ending Alzheimer’s to be shared by the next U.S. President, so an advocacy training session will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, at the Coralville Public Library to help advocates know what to say when speaking with presidential candidates.

  • Sean McIntyre shared that there still are some supplies at the Rotary office that he would like to donate in preparation for moving to a new location. If you know of someone in need, let him know.

  • Usha Balakrishnan shared that as New Membership and Fulfillment Committee chair, she is pleased to report that we are adding new members at the rate of one per week. Still, because of the attrition experienced by a club our size, that does not automatically mean growth. We have 318 members currently.

Susan Brennan shared her story. She was born in Marshalltown and attended Iowa State University. While working at her first job in medical sales, she met her husband-to-be in Memphis. The relocated to Iowa, and now have three kids.
