Rtn.  Jim Conard introduced our speaker, Jessica Pray Patel. Jessica is an opera singer with a Bachelor of Music in  Vocal Performance from the University of Iowa and a Masters in Voice (Opera) from Yale School of Music. Jessica has performed in Europe and will be singing and performing in New York  and Europe in the months ahead.

Jessica began her address to the members by singing an aria.

Jessica thanked all in attendance and indicated that she is happy to be living in Iowa City. While growing up in Urbandale, it is no surprise that she chose music as a career since her Mom was a music director at Church and both her brother and sister were musical as well. While in college, Jessica questioned the earning potential of a musican and discussed this with her father who was a lawyer. Jessica compared the earning potential of high perfoming professional basketball players at $300,000 per game compared to the earning of the most popular opera singer, Renee Fleming who earns $15,000 per performance. Jessica’s father encouraged her to not give up on music. Jessica encouraged those in attendance to support music by attending performances, playing or singing in a choir or taking lessons. She provided many benefits for including music in your life. Music is helpful to brain development, and language acquitision, to name a few. Jessica made a special plea to help keep musicians in Iowa. If Jessica could be an Ambassador of Music in Iowa, she would work to support music teachers and resoures and help to educate on the scientific benefits found in music. Jessica has an upcoming performance at the UI Recital Hall on Monday, October 30th at 7:30p.

The meeting ended, timely at 1:00 pm, as President Mike led us in reciting the Four (4) Way Test.
