Posted by Devin van Holsteijn on Aug 19, 2018
The club was greeted by, Rtns. Kelley Drowne and Christy Fehlberg.

Our Meeting was called to order by President Steve Quigley.

President Steve Quigley shared that Rtn. George Eichacker will be moving to Las Vegas soon and will be moving his Rotary membership to a club there.

President Quigley also asked that all members pay their dues as soon as possible to allow the club to continue its annual commitments to programs that have an impact here in Iowa City and around the world.

Announcements:

Rtn. Barb Thomas shared that the club will be giving $500 of club funds to support the community of Marshalltown (recently hit by a tornado) through the Rotary Club of Marshalltown. Club members gave $710 additional in additional gifts last week and others can still give through our club or directly to the Rotary Club in Marshalltown.

PROGRAM:
Rtn. Linda Farkas introduced herself as the chair of the youth leadership committee and the presenter of today's program of the 18 students who attended the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) in Grinnell this summer as well as the 16 students who attended the World Affairs Seminar (WAS) in Waukesha, Wisconsin. All students received a scholarship through our club. She thanked the youth leadership committee members and parents in particular first. She also shared that thanks to generous donations and club support, this program has grown tremendously over the last several years from sending one student to each program to a total of 34 this summer.

Linda then asked the students seated with each table of Rotarians along with their parents to share about their experiences. 10 minutes of great conversation followed. Rtn. Sarah Richardson then introduced Jamie Porter, a former RYLA and WAS participant who attended thanks to scholarship from our club. Jamie shared that he is a 2015 graduate of Regina High School and plans to graduate with a Political Science/Public Policy major and Economics minor from the University of Iowa in the spring of 2019. Having attended RYLA in 2013 and WAS 2014, Jamie shared that he learned and honed valuable skills through both experiences. These included how to tackle big programs, how to understand diversity, the importance of good leadership and a passion for public service.

Linda then returned to the podium to thank all who have supported RYLA and WAS scholars, especially those financial sponsors and the parents who made it possible for their children to attend these programs. Finally, Linda asked each of the scholars present to share a little about themselves. President Quigley then asked everyone to thank Linda for her service.

The meeting ended at 1:00 pm as President Steve led the assembly in reciting The Four Way Test.
