PROGRAM:
Rtn. Dayna Ballantyne introduced Dean Julie Zerwic.

Dean Julie Zerwic, shared that the University of Iowa College of Nursing is celebrating their 120 anniversary. The College of Nursing offers several degrees, BSN, RN-BSN, MS, Doctorate and PhD. Dean Zerwic shared the following College of Nursing Rankings:
  • #1 Iowa Nursing Program
  • #27 Masters (in the country)
  • #15 Doctorate of Nursing Practice (in the country)
  • #2 in Nursing Administration (in the country)
Their building is undergoing a major renovation and we are welcomed to visit on Sunday as part of their anniversary celebration.
Dean Zerwic shared statistics from the program. 2/3 of graduates from Iowa stay in Iowa to work after graduation. 1/3 of graduates who come from out of state do stay in Iowa after graduation. The full time RN workforce is steady. The age range of RNs with active licenses is concerning since the majority are at or nearing retirement age. The UI Nursing Program is working with community colleges on an agreement for a seamless process to encourage a baccalaureate program obtained at a four-year university. Important to the outcomes for patients and overall healthcare for Iowans. 10% increase in the proportion of BSN nurses resulted in a 5% decrease in patient deaths. (Aiken 2003).
There is a strong partnership with the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics and College of Nursing, strong history of collaboration and developing models across research, practice, and education.

After audience questions President Elect, James Conard thanked Dean Zerwic for her outstanding program.
