HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING AT EAST POLK ROTARY
Greetings East Polk Rotarians,

Superintendent Dirk invited Darell Butcher, College and Career Readiness Coordinator at Southeast Polk High School, to be our speaker last week.  Darell reported on their Skilled Trades program which has developed a relationship with companies in the area to start an apprenticeship program where students can learn and earn at the same time.  The diesel mechanics program started this school year is proving to be very beneficial for the students chosen to participate.  Other apprenticeship programs are being developed to offer to students in different Skilled Trades.  A building is being designed to be built on the Southeast Polk campus to house these programs. Thanks to the futuristic thinking of the leaders in this department, many students will be career-ready when they graduate.

Marti has set up the schedule for those who signed up to take food to Joe and Becki Flannery during Becki's treatment and recovery program.  If you didn't sign up last week and would like to be added, please let Marti know.  Thanks to Marti and all those who are providing this special service to our fellow Rotarian.

This week is Business and Breakfast.  Thanks, Darrell, for organizing a hot breakfast on a cold morning.

Terry Ziegler, Rotary Region 26 Endowment/Major Gifts Adviser -No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.
What is the Polio Picture?  For the Most Consequential Geographies - 2023 is a critical year for the global effort to eradicate Polio.  It is the year when all remaining poliovirus transmission globally is slated to be fully interrupted, per GPEI Polio Eradication Strategy 2022-2026.  A unique epidemiological window of opportunity is presenting itself at the start of the year, that we must capitalize on.  So, what is the program's focus for achieving success this year?  The answer is:  reaching zero-dose children in the most consequential geographies, in the two countries with remaining endemic to wild poliovirus - Pakistan and Afghanistan - virus transmission is more geographically restricted than ever before.  The virus is at its weakest now, and the opportunity to wiping it out completely is now at its greatest.
