HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING AT EAST POLK ROTARY
Greetings East Polk Rotarians,

We had a great group last Tuesday for the trivia contest at Sam's Sports Bar and Grill.  While we were in a solid top five places in the beginning, as the night wore on the questions got tougher and we ended up at the bottom half of the rankings.  Regardless, it was a fun night bonding with fellow Rotarians.

Note that the CIVITAS event on Human Trafficking is coming up on Tuesday, May 2, at the Hilton Garden Inn in West Des Moines.  If you plan to attend, please sign up through the club, which will then invoice you.  We will need a final count by April 19.

Also, please remember to sign up to judge at the Iowa Technology Exposition coming up soon on Friday, May 12, at Southeast Polk High School.

Terry Ziegler, Rotary Region 26 Endowment/Major Gifts Adviser - No new Wild Polio cases reported this week.
With more than 20 years' experience in Afghanistan, WHO's polio eradication program continues to leverage its extensive operational capacity to deliver better health outcomes for all Afghans, including providing vital support to the recent nationwide measles vaccination campaign.  Measles outbreaks were reported across Afghanistan throughout 2022, with more than 5,000 cases and an estimated 300 deaths reported in November.  Most cases are children under the age of 5 years.  Like Polio, there is no treatment for measles; the only reliable protection is vaccination.  While a series of sub national measles vaccination campaigns took place in 2022 reaching approximately three million children in 141 districts, the nationwide campaign from November 26 to December 5 represented the first national measles drive since the political transition in 2021.  The campaign covered 329 districts in all 34 provinces, vaccinating 5.36 million children aged from 9 to 59 months against the disease.  6.1 million children between 0 to 59 months received oral polio vaccine.

The news this week if from Belize, Central America, where Zoila Palma Gonzalez, a journalist at Breaking Belize News, reports on a Rotary International Global Grant for a project at the Kolbe Foundation, a Nonprofit Agency dedicated to helping inmates and their families.  Valued at $174,000, the Rotary Foundation Global Grant will provide accessories aimed at improving the literacy standards of inmates at the Belize Central Prison in Hattieville.  Through a learning software dubbed RACHEL (Remote Area Community Hotspot Education and Learning), the program will teach over 400 inmates English and Phonics, Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Computer Skills.  The RF Global Grant provides inmates with 240 Chromebooks, headsets, desks, printers, stationery and training.  The pilot project is being offered at St. Martin De Porres School for students to have access to literacy accessories.  The Rotary Club of Port Moody partnered with TRF on the grant.
