HERE'S WHAT'S HAPPENING AT EAST POLK ROTARY
Greetings East Polk Rotarians,

Thanks to the members who attended last week to hear the latest about the wind and solar energy developments at MidAmerican Energy, from yours truly.  Your interest and questions were greatly appreciated.  I was happy to share that we are working hard at MidAmerican to provide the technology to keep up with the growing need for reliable energy sources in the future.

Also, thanks to those who attended the regional district conference last Saturday evening.  I have received good reports that everyone enjoyed learning about the accomplishments of Rotary this past year, and everyone enjoyed their choice of steak or chicken dinner.  Congratulations to Marti who was able to attend with her chauffer, Linda.  And thanks to Marie for sharing the French silk pie that she purchased in the dessert auction.

Our CIVITAS event on Human Trafficking is today, May 2, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in West Des Moines.  Thanks to all those who plan to attend. We have some very interesting speakers who are involved in stopping this tragic activity preying on our society.  The cost to attend is $20, which includes heavy hor d'oeuvres and two free drinks.  (Please note that breakfast will be served at our next morning meeting on May 12.)

Coming up this Saturday - The Caring Hands Community Cookout and bedding plant sale with free food and live music on Saturday, May 6, at the Caring Hands facility.  It starts at 11:00 a.m. and goes to 3 p.m.  Food will be served between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.  Steve Mather is in charge of preparing and grilling chicken breasts for the Rotary contribution.  Tom Bylund is serving as his assistant.  If you wish to help, please check with Steve.  All Rotarians are welcome to participate in the event.  Several civic organizations are involved, and it will be a fun way to provide service to the community and help raise funds for Caring Hands.

Also, please remember to sign up to judge at the Iowa Technology Exposition on Friday, May 12, at Southeast Polk High School.  Brett Rickabaugh just sent out an email with instructions for the judges.  Please plan to be at the school around 8:45 a.m.  Coffee and doughnuts will be available while we wait for our instructions from Brett and Ryan about judging that day.  Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m., so just stop by as you are finished with your judging task and have lunch.

Olabisi Gwamna, Editor, Foundation Minute:  Welcome to Week 1 of RI's Youth Service Month.
At the Rotary District 6000 conference, held this past weekend, it was announced that John Ockenfels of District 6000 and Peter Teahen of District 5970 would depart in a single-engine plane, on a goodwill mission-trip around the world aimed at raising not just awareness of, but funds for Polio Plus.  In a massive plan that would see these two Rotarians flying on behalf of RF to Maine, Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Europe, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, Australia, the South Pacific, Hawaii, California and Denver, before returning to Cedar Rapids around mid-July, the seasoned pilots would have covered more than 29,000 miles, made 33 landings in 25 countries and an estimated 135 in-flight hours.  They intend to raise awareness and $1 million for Rotary International's three-decade quest to eradicate polio.  The two pilots are paying for the flight out of their own pockets and also have some equipment grants, so all the money donated by the public will to go the Rotary's International polio initiative.  Peter Teahen, 69, of Robins, and John Ockenfels, 70, of Shueyville, will join the roster of the 700 pilots who have flown around the world in a single-engine plane.  Of those daring pilots since the beginning of aviation, 300 are alive today.

Yours in Service,
