What a fun time at our annual banquet and gavel passing ceremony last Thursday evening!  President Mike Hartwig did a masterful job  conducting an interesting meeting with some "fun" and some "serious" award presentations to the fellow Rotarians honored for the 2018-2019 year.  Congratulations to all Rotarians who participated in our projects and actitivies last year.  Thanks again, Mike, for your  leadership.
Then it was time to pass the gavel to our new President, Gregg Lynes.  Gregg gave a really inspiring speech outlining his goals for our East Polk Rotary Club for 2019-2020.  Congratulations Gregg.  We are really looking forward to helping you reach the goals you outlined as we all work together to serve our club, our community, and our world.  The Rotary International theme this year is "Rotary Connects the World."
Rotarian of the Day is Kevin Jasa.  Kevin is bringing his friend, Jenny Smith, who was awarded a Rotary scholarship for her Masters Degree.  Sounds very interesting.
Sergeant-at-Arms is Clay Willey.
Gregg is bringing Regan Trexel, the Interact Vice President, as his guest.  He is asking for suggestions on how we as a club can interact more with the Interact Club.
Food Pantry Day tomorrow.  Please be generous.
Polio Eradication Update from District 6000 -
Five new Wild Polio cases reported this week.  There were more cases of wild poliovirus in 2018 than in 2017.  Should we be discouraged?  "No, not at all," says Michael McGovern, the International Chair of the PolioPlus Committee.  "We've always expected the number of cases to fluctuate somewhat as we get closer to zero.  With dedication from governments and Rotarians in areas still affected by polio, we'll get there."  The goal is zero.
Pakistan - Three new Wild Polio cases.  This makes twenty-seven in 2019.  They had twelve in 2018.
Afghanistan - Two new Polio cases reported this week.  Ten Polio cases reported so far in 2019.  They had twenty-one in 2018.
Nigeria - No Wild Polio cases were reported in 2017, 2018, or 2019.  They have reached 2 3/4 years without a case.
Upcoming events -
-- July 17 -  District Governor Erna Morain will be visiting for our regular 7 a.m. meeting at Prairie Meadows.  Board members will be meeting with her at Eric's office at 6:30 p.m. the evening before to discuss her plans for the next year.  If you are serving as an officer, or a chair or co-chair of a committee, you are invited to attend.
-- July 17 - Summer picnic at Pam's house in the evening.  This is for the whole family, so bring the kids.  Pam has a really nice swimming pool for them to enjoy...weather permitting.  If it rains, she also has a dry garage where we can sit inside and eat while watching the rain.  Either way, it's a great time for Rotary families to get together and fellowship, and enjoy a great meal...which we prepared ourselves.
