AUCTION TEAM SAYS THANK-YOU!!

Our annual Rotary Online Auction finished last month and the final meeting of the participating clubs to review the results took place a couple of weeks ago. The auction was able to raise over $100,000, in part generated by a 25% increase in bidders over last year on nearly 1,300 items.  A total of nine clubs were involved this year, including our club, Oakville and Oakville West, Burlington, Georgetown, Kitchener, Milton, and two Mississauga Clubs.

The auction would not have been possible without the significant support of our many sponsors and generous donors and of course our members who were able to solicit the donations.  Despite the challenges of Covid-19, many local businesses stepped up to support this Rotary initiative to help those in need locally and globally.  Our club’s share this year was $30,000 which is similar to last year, a much less challenging year.

Resolutions

Have you made any resolutions for 2021? I suspect a lot of us have given up on them. We know from experience our resolutions are often undermined by old habits or changed circumstances.  Why bother when the end result will probably end up in failure.

Some suggest that we would probably do better if we only made one resolution. That may be so.

But the problem is not making resolutions or breaking them!  It is all about how skilled we are in dealing with failure. Do we see failures as a sign of weakness? Do we feel our mistakes and failures diminish our self-respect?  Life is hard enough without making it worse by setting goals we probably can’t meet. Better safe than sorry.

A few years ago a girls’ high school in Wimbleton in the U.K. held a ‘Failure Week’. The goal was to build resilience by helping the students accept failures as a natural, and essential, part of life. During the week the students were encouraged to take risks and develop skills needed to accept and manage failure. To see it as a natural part of living and growing.

Resolutions get broken, lots of things don’t work out. They are not judgements on our character but lessons to be learned, and maybe even a new path or opportunity. It is the way life works.

UPDATE FROM THE INDIGENOUS PERSONS COMMITTEE
his month we sent out Thank You notes to everyone that donated to the Art for Aid project and received some nice complementary notes backs. People were definitely pleased to have an opportunity to support Art Programs for Indigenous Students up North.

We also received some very exciting news regarding the Indigenous Scholarship. A Rotarian from the Kitchener Rotary Club, who has occasionally supported the scholarship Program in the past, has committed to donating $3,000/year for three years, starting in June 2021. Along with the recent donation from the Faith United Milton, this will definitely help us meet our financial needs for the Scholarship going forward.
