HAPPY CANADA DAY
PRESIDENT PHALPHER'S PEN
The moving finger writes………

Let’s start with congratulating Bent and his Board for a very successful Rotary year, and recognizing some of its key achievements.
This photo is from Bent's last Board meeting. Missing from the photograph are Lauri Asikainen and Jennifer Kay.

‘Taking the Pulse’ survey was successful in assessing where we are and what the club members would like to see in the coming years.  Follow-up of the ‘Taking the Pulse’ input has resulted in a concrete action plan for the Membership committee, and Bent has agreed to facilitate similar sessions for other committees early in the 2017-18 year.

For 2016-17, kudos to Trish, Cliff and their entire Ribfest team for a very successful Ribfest.  The turnout on Saturday exceeded our expectations and stretched some of our capabilities to its limit.  Conceived under the leadership of Past-President Brian seven year ago, this was our sixth Ribfest.  Although we do not have the final score, it appears that this may have been our best Ribfest ever, both in terms of the number of visitors and the funds raised.

It is funds from Ribfest and our co-fundraisers, Online Auction and Wines and Lines, that make our contributions to our avenues of service possible: International, Next Generation, Community Service and Indigenous Committee. To this extent, congratulations to June and Claire for being recognized at the District turnover last week for their tremendous effort and contribution to the WASH project.
Also accolades to John and his team for organizing the very successful Education Awards in May.  Both these are covered in more detail in this and previous issue of RIOTS.

It is a collective effort of all our members that makes our fundraising and avenues of service possible. But one does not have to a be a RCOT member to contribute. We have the likes of Ilona Kopriva, Barb Ferrone, past-member Gino Paccione and Desmond’s several friends actively engaged in Rotary activities without being members.  So, our focus in 2017-18 is going to be more on member engagement rather than getting the proverbial ‘bums on the seat’ for lunch.
This is in line with the theme ‘Rotary: Making the Difference’ announced in Jan 2017 by Ian Riseley, RI President for Rotary year 2017-18.  To this extent, we will be seeking members’ input on proposals to focus on more fellowship activities and enhance our lunch meetings.  More on this at our upcoming lunch meetings.

Let us go forward in this new fiscal year and make the Rotary difference!

Happy Canada’s 150th Birthday!
………. and having writ, moves on!

JIM'S JOTTINGS
Presentism is an interesting word coined by historians to explain a lot of what is happening in today’s society.  It refers to our willingness to judge the past by the present, by hindsight gained from our knowledge of the way things worked out. It is about how we apply the sensitivities and values of our time to the actions people in the past thought were normal or necessary; slavery, treating women as a second class, prohibition, the dropping of the atomic bomb, the popular adulation given to dictators like Hitler and Stalin, and the way the poor were punished for being poor. Apologies flow for the ‘mistakes’ made when we were at war in the 40s and fear caused us to set up camps for ‘enemy aliens’; and for the terrible impact of the residential schools, and, well, there’s quite a list of things done in the past that our Parliament has apologized for.  Saying sorry certainly helps to heal a lot of wounds and often sets the way to progress.

It is all well and good but our presentism makes me wonder what the generations that come after us will judge to be shocking, perhaps evil, in our time. What will they feel they should apologize for? The way so many citizens need to use food banks to survive; the lack of affordable housing; the way greed is honoured and rewarded; the lack of planning we have on how to care for older citizens and the infirm; our full prisons and obsession with solitary confinement; our elitist educational system; our slowness to improve the lives of indigenous people; the neglect of the development in our north; the massive production of waste…

I wonder.

RIBFEST IS OVER!
ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL RIBFEST

I would just like to take this time to thank the hardworking Steering Committee of the Ribfest for all that you do.  Some may not realize how much work goes into this endeavour. My most sincere thanks to everyone for the hard work and smiling faces.

I would also like to thank all of the Rotary volunteers and their families who came out to help over the weekend. We couldn't do it without you.

VOLUNTEERS ARE THE BEST!
What a weekend!
Thank you is not enough to all of our wonderful volunteers...but we're saying it anyway: THANK YOU!

You helped clean and drive and direct and welcome over 30,000 people through our festival gates.

Thank you for joining the army of volunteers who made this weekend possible - you are helping the Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar invest the funds from this weekend to those who need it most.

Otherwise, THANK YOU again for your volunteer hours. You will be hearing from us in a few weeks, calling all volunteers who need verification of their hours.
Again, you're wonderful. Thanks for helping to make the 6th Annual Cooperators Oakville Family Ribfest a huge success.

'HANDS-ON' OPPORTUNITIES

Club members have expressed a desire to have more 'hands-on' involvement with the community.

In RIOTS and the Weekly Courier we are now showing where there are opportunities to be 'hands-on' and be involved as either a volunteer, a participant or both. We'll keep this section going as long as we have the content to support it.

ROTARY EDUCATION AWARDS
SNAPD Oakville attended our MAy 25th Education Awards and wrote the following in their latest edition.

"Oakville is proud to boast three chapters of Rotary Clubs, an impressive group of community members facilitating local learning and social events. The three Rotary Clubs in Oakville came together this month to award 30 students with a total of $60,000 in education awards. These financial awards are intended to conquer barriers to success for these bright and inspired young students. Local community members were also invited to attend and support the award winners by purchasing a $25 dinner ticket for the event held at Le Dome convention centre. Award winners were chosen on ethical merit and academic success for an overall exceptional scholastic performance. To view and/or download all photos from this event, please visit www.oakville.snapd.com"

BEYOND OUR BORDERS
WAREHOUSE OF HOPE
Attached is a picture of our latest shipment.
We often get asked what is in the boxes that we are collecting and sending around the world along with the wheelchairs, walkers, bath chairs, toilet booster seats, etc.

When someone in homecare either dies or recovers the CCAC nurses go into the home and collect everything that is left and by law must throw it in the garbage.  These are totally sealed, sterile packages often in unopened boxes and containers – and sometimes in boxes that have been delivered in error to the wrong house – still all must go to the garbage.  So, what kind of items:  i.v. tubing; catheter tubing; gauze bandages in all sizes; needles for injections; face masks and hospital gowns; surgical gloves and so much more.

These items are taken by The Niagara Warehouse of Hope which is based in St. Catharines.  It is run by a Mennonite community and they ship it around the world to developing countries:  Nigeria, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba and many many more.

NOTE FROM WORLD LITERACY
We received the attached letter from World Literacy Canada.

We gave them quite substantial support in creating a library in Varanasi, India.
Sandra Onufryk was the lead on that project, I believe, and when I chaired International we continued to provide support to their scholarship program for girls.

The letter indicates that the charity is having to close due to the withdrawal of government funding which occurred under the Harper era.

We thought that our members should be made aware due to our past history with the organization.

OAKVILLE TRAFALGAR INTERACT CLUB
Oakville Trafalgar’s Interact club hosted their annual Halloween Costume contest this fall, where students paid for the entry of their costume that would be voted on by their peers. The most-voted costume is presented a gift certificate to Pita Pit!

In December, the club sold students pictures with Santa in the decorated atrium. Interact regularly participates in school run Devils Days where clubs are permitted to reserve tables and sell food products in the atrium. Members of our club are always enthusiastic to make baked goods and bring them in to sell to our classmates.

With all the money combined together from these events it contributes a significant portion to our overall donation pool. This year we also decided to run a special “waffle day”. This is where we brought in toaster waffles and set up a toppings bar complete with candy, whipped cream, chocolate chips and syrups donated by members of our club. The response we received was very positive and we were able to generate both money and awareness of Interact Club.
Here is a picture of some of the OTHS Interact members with Kelsey Horn (L) and Cara Cruickshank, Co Chairs, in front, teacher mentor Mary Collett on the right
