Sleeping Children Around the World

Thursday, April 12, The Rotary Club of Oakville Trafalgar had one of the finest hours in the club’s history. Jim Wilson introduced our guests for the day; children from J. W. Hill Public School with their Vice Principal Gabriela Echeverria and teacher Mr. Dan Fisher. They had come to present $ 2,900 they had raised at their school for Sleeping Children Around the World (SCAW). As part the Club’s long commitment to support SCAW( 30 years) we double the money the children raise each year. Our President, Brian Simpson, announced that the club’s contribution this year is $5,000, with a matching grant of $5,000 from Rotary District 7080 a grand total of $12,900 was given to SCAW.

Joe Vet, who delivered SCAW bedkits in the 1990s, told of how emotional it was to present the bed kits to impoverished children in Bangladesh.  Then Debbie Dryden – granddaughter of SCAW’s founders, Murray and Margaret Dryden – recently back home from delivering bedkits to children in Pune in India, with great charm,  spoke to the children and to us about how having a bedkit transforms the lives of children and equips them to go to school.  The students from James W. Hill Elementary unpacked a sample bedkit and they held up the contents for all to see: blankets, mats, school uniforms, school supplies, anti-malaria nets and so much more.

Wonderful young students… a great cause…. a significant contribution… excellent address….one of our BMEs (Best Meetings Ever).
