Announcements: Pres Gerry
- School Event: BHS Open House for parents and students on August 29th 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. BRC will have a table to share what we’re about with our community. Trifold displays made by Eric Anderson over the years will be on display to showcase our work. Participation will be good marketing and provide information for new club members that attend. Please let Gerry know if you want to volunteer. Dick Swett will check on Interac’s participation.
- School Event: BMS tour of building renovations on August 27th.
- Dunbarton Community Outreach – How do we get the word out to the community about our club?
- Assignments: A lot of changes! Bob Couch reminded us there are 5 tabs on the member commitment’s document and to look at the 4th tab for individual assignments. While most who attend Friday meetings likely don’t also read the bulletin, individual assignments are listed at the end. Please read the bulletin even if you attend a meeting! President Gerry conveyed Please and thank you for keeping up with your assignments and changes.
- Club Gear: Attention brought that the club hasn’t ordered shirts, hats, etc. in a while. Who would be interested in leading this effort? Several hands went up, including Vanessa and Tanya (Lead TBD).

David Farr & Tonya Frost – Concert Series: Hot Skillet this week was last concert of the year, yielding $108 plus snack money. Smaller crowds when we’re inside. Please pick up and return yard signs. Thanks to everyone that helped with the series and to those Rotarians that attended the concerts.

Program: Matt Gaetz introduced guest speakers, Joel Berman and Brian MacDonald on Becoming Braver Angels – Depolarizing the United States
Presentation designed to pique curiosity. “I don’t like that man” – A. Lincoln. Emphasized toxic polarization needs to be fixed, to understand people instead of picking people based on politics.
Rotary aligns with their organization by engaging people along diverse demographics. We can disagree without hate; hate because of politics isn’t getting us anywhere. Disagree with people without being disagreeable. Recommended Reading by Monica Guzman I Never Thought of it This Way.
Braver Network encourages companies to embrace principles to get people talk. Building a global network is building a house united. Pledges to seek out other sides and try to see their perspectives looking for common ground to listen to understand not just respond. Rules include having an equal number of red and blue leaders. Do not have as many reds as blues and recruiting for more reds for membership to reflect the country. Goal to understand not change mind to change our own point of view of the other person. We can learn to disagree better.
Braver Politics is expanding effort to reach out to legislators and staff to generate enthusiasm for hope through this grassroots effort. This is also the why for addressing BRC today.
President Gerry had presenters sign the Rulers of the Playground book that will be donated to Dunbarton Elementary School on their behalf as a thank you from BRC.
President Gerry closed the meeting with a toast to Rotary the world over.
