Announcements: A ”Pass the Hat” was done today in support of the Ouellette family. Rotarians that are present may place their donation in the box. Zoomers may send their donation to the Bow Rotary PO Box 1935. Gerry will collect these and bring them to the Safety Building. Or Rotarians can drop their donation off at the Safety Building. Checks will go directly to the family and should be made out to the family. President Ben and Dick Swett have attended a District 7870 Rotary Foundation Grant Training session to continue our work toward international giving. Matt Dodge showed us a small bottle of maple syrup and asked us what it was. It was a great way to remind us that donations to the auction which we are collecting are in fact scholarships. What an excellent reminder of our important work. He did say the sponsorships are going well. Raffle tickets are now being dispersed to Rotarians for us to sell prior to the Auction on November 6. Discussion was held as to whether we should continue an in-person auction or go hybrid or remote. The auction committee will make their recommendation on September 29 based on the Covid numbers that NH is experiencing. Rotarians are asked to send their recommendations / comfortableness to Matt. He will send out an email to ask about our thoughts. It was also suggested that we ask the similar question on the Bow Community Facebook page. Sergeant at Arms: Gerry Carrier Fines: Dean Cascadden was fined for a beautiful colored picture of him in the Bow Times from the Car Show. He paid $4 which emptied his pockets. Happy Bucks: - Happy Birthday to Karen Wadsworth. “Life is Interesting” and she is trying to make tough decisions on what to do at this stage of life, especially with her family spread around the country. She is donating $200 to the Rotary Foundation this year because she forgot last year. Happy Birthday Karen! Keep on counting!
- Gerry Carrier: 55 years ago today, he and his wife met at a wedding and had their first dance!
- Dave Scanlan: His daughter accepted a new job and will be moving from Baltimore to Seattle. The family will be making a two-week cross-country road trip together to assist in the move and have some quality time together.
- Jon Ruggles: Happy about cooking at car show and he was grateful be positioned close enough to be able to listen to Dean so well.
- Linda Bliss: Happy about a recent significant high school reunion celebration.
- Judy Goodnow: Happy 18th Wedding Anniversary dinner which was celebrated with the minister and maid of honor!
- Ben Kiniry: Happy about a bike race last weekend where his wife had her best race time to date. He is also happy about the release of Matrix 4.
- Mike Gula: Pleased to feel and see the mutual support that our town’s people display during tragedies that affect our community. Very thankful to live in Bow. Also happy that he and his son took the NH Fish and Game Hunter’s Safety course together. He did admit that his son received a higher test score than himself…. Happy really.
Program: Matt Gatzke introduced Donna Parker, Vice President of Development at the NH Make-A-Wish Foundation. Donna has served this organization for 17 years as of this month. NH Make-A-Wish granted its first wish in 1987. Although affiliated with the national foundation, all money raised in NH stays in NH for wishes to be granted. Wishes are granted to children who are sick with a progressive, degenerative, or malignant disease, but not necessarily terminal. 1750 wishes have been granted in NH to date: one every 4.5 days on average. She did remind us of the real hope that wishes give to children which helps lessen the anxiety that treatment causes them. Wishes are grant on the recommendation of doctors and a team of two volunteers that help the children focus on what they would really like to do, or to have, or to meet, or to see. She did share with us 4 stories about children who as either children or adults now serve as ambassadors on behalf of the program. Also, three of them, as adults, have chosen to work in the medical field or have come to work or volunteer for Make-A-Wish.
