Attendance:
  • 37 Bow Rotarians
  • 0 Visiting Rotarians
  • 0 Guests
  • 1 Guest speakers
Total of  38

Announcements:
  • Matt Gatzke announced that his daughter was recently diagnosed with cancer.  She is having treatment at Dana Farber Center, so he may be missing some upcoming meetings.
  • Christmas Tree Sales.  Paul Mercier reported that the deposit is going out today.  Gerry Carrier has ordered 200 trees, same volume as last year.  The pricing is the same as last year too.  Potential delivery is the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
  • Old Town Hall.  Judy Goodnow announced we are 98% done the wallpaper removal.  Jerry Kingwill is working with someone to make some repairs.  The town should be the entity funding the repairs, not our Rotary Club.  They are looking at painting the ceilings next.
  • Auction.  Michelle Olivier.  No major announcements.  They are working with NH Mail and Print to print promotional material.  Sponsor letters should be going out soon.  There was some dialogue about how another non-profit, CRVNA, had their auction on-line.  Linda Lorden or Mike Griffin can connect Michelle with the auction chair at the VNA if there is interest.
Sergeant at Arms:
Birthday: Joya Dennehy celebrated a birthday recently.  Things are going well at work, despite the Covid 19 situation.  Joya is donating $47 to the Club.

Happy Bucks:
  • Dick Swett.  Happy $5.  His daughter Chelsea had a write up that was posted in the Union Leader.  The topic was about living outside of the U.S.
  • Judy Goodnow.  Happy $17 for her 17th wedding anniversary.  She and her husband celebrated this recently at Wentworth By The Sea.
  • Chris Parkinson.  Announcement Buck.  November 12th 7:00 PM is the date for the virtual District Meeting and “Dinner”.  There will be a raffle with multiple items.  Each club should provide an item as a raffle.  All proceeds go to the Rotary Foundation.  Also, he is looking for an exercise bicycle.
  • Matt Gatzke.  He confessed that he was not wearing his pin.  Some members of our club received recognition.  Eric Anderson and Betsey were in the local newspaper recently.  Bill Ames received recognition as well.
Program:
Bill Ames announced today’s speaker: Lilly Wellington from the Friends Program. Lilly is the
Director of Senior Programs

Lilly reminded that the Friends Program has four areas of focus:
  • Youth Mentoring Program
  • Only Family Shelter in Merrimack
  • Two programs for Seniors, which is what Lilly is reviewing today.
  1. Foster Grandparent Program.  This matches moderate income adults with at risk students in schools, daycares and preschools.  It offers one to one social-emotional support and tutoring.  Volunteers serve 10-20 hours per week and are paid a tax free stipend for their service.  Currently this program has 97 active Foster Grandparents who served 96,096 hours last year.
  2. Retired and Senior Volunteer Program.  This program partners with local agencies to meet critical community needs by recruiting, training and supporting volunteers to meet the demand.  Volunteers are 55 and above.  427 volunteers served 41,692 hours last year.
Lilly discussed how they are responding to Covid 19 for these volunteer programs.  They are partnering with CAT, Concord Area Transport.
How can people help?  Promote the programs for more volunteers.  They currently have 3 seniors in Bow on their wait list.  Help promote this program by offering tips on where to display their flyers.  Spread the word by word of mouth.
There was a Question and Answer session at the end of the presentation.  Lilly’s contact information is listed on the Friends Program website.  If anyone is interested in volunteering, she encouraged that we contact her.

Respectfully Submitted,
Mike Griffin
