Announcements:
- Corn Hole at Alan’s of Boscawen, 6 pm to 8:30 pm, November 19th. We will win by sheer numbers in attendance!
- Auction Update: Carol Niegisch reports we raised about $25,000 and offered her thank you’s to all who secured items, bid on items and purchased items.
- President Dick requested reports due for the Board Meeting.
- Interact: Steve DeStefano reported that Interact is once again preparing pies for the Thanksgiving dinner at The Windmill. Anyone wishing to contribute a pie or help transport pies, please contact him. In addition, Interact and EarlyAct will be making birdseed wreaths. Peter Imse showed off a potpourri kit for simmering, but none are available because they have all been sold.
- Trees: Mike Griffin says tree set up will occur the Saturday after Thanksgiving; shift sign up is on SignUpGenius. Posters will be available next Friday.
- Amigos: Gerry Carrier reported that $595 was collected for medicines; the Board is likely to match that amount.
- Auction of items un-sold through the online process were then auctioned off. Bidding was lively and most items were sold. Some to think about for next week: DeepWoods Cottages, Little Moxie Cove, Crisp Law firm (estate planning documents), and Camp Cody (located in Freedom, Maine). Details on each are found at the Bow Rotary website on the Auction tab.
Sergeant at Arms: David Farr fined himself for no pin.
Birthdays: Gerry Carrier is now into the 4th quarter, he says. It was a good year. Although his granddaughter’s truck was t-boned in Wyoming, she is okay. He has completed a long-awaited renovation at his house and is looking forward to skiing with his grandson.
Program: President Dick introduced Jon Ruggles, long-time member of the Club for some personal history about the hardest things he had to overcome.
Jon was wide-ranging, from his “doggy in the window” Sheltie, to stopping smoking cold turkey. He related some harrowing accidents experienced by himself and his father, and spoke with pride at his son Chris, who is 5 years sober.
We can’t begin to describe the story about golf balls in the microwave and how he learned that warm blankets are more useful to get your balls warm.
Jon is a resilient and incredibly strong individual; he has faced significant tragedy yet emerges as a thoughtful and caring person. He was given a standing ovation by the Club.
President Dick closed the meeting with a toast to Rotary the world over.
