Program:
Donna Deos introduced 2 of the Speech Contest winners, Evelyn Hatem and Elise Lowne.
Donna also thanked the folks that made the evening possible. Rotarians that assisted were Karen Wadsworth, Dean Cascadden, Michelle Fortin, Gail Kenison, Dave Stack, Bryant Stevener, Betsy Patten, Ben Kiniry and his family, and Eric Anderson for photography. Friends of the club who also assisted were Lori Fisher from the Bow Library, Kim Place from Bow and Bill Westenberg from Dunbarton.
Evelyn Hatem placed in the 3rd position:
Emily spoke about Social Activism. As always the speech is based on the Rotary “4 way test”. The value of protesting for a worthy cause, and how that is important to the youth of today, and have an understanding of being able to address issues, that otherwise do not get traction through the more traditional avenues. She for one will not participate in the protest, but will support those who do it for the correct reasons. For it is those, who help create change ultimately!
Elise Lowne placed 1st in the competition and will represent the club.
Elise spoke on how cell phones and the social media have a profound effect on the mental health of today’s society. Dopamine is a chemical released by neurons to send signals to other nerve cells. The brain includ
es distinct dopamine pathways, one of which controls the motivational component or reward. Social media has altered our interaction with others, and we tend to spend time on our cell phones before we interact with others. When we are bored- we tend to gravitate to social media for instant gratification from quick false feel-good response. As a result depression sets in, and society is turning to drugs and alcohol = a beginning of an epidemic.

Bryant Stevener closed the meeting with a toast to Rotary at 8:22.
