Bow Rotary Club Meeting – October 23, 2015

Gerry observed the celestial novelty of the planets Mars and Venus lining up in the night sky.
With Mars representing males and Venus representing females, it would appear they are getting ready for a date.
President Mike opened the meeting.

Announcements:
President Mike reminded the Club of the Foundation Dinner on November 10th in Nashua. He also mentioned the Concord Young Professional Network was a great event and the presence of members from our club gave Bow Rotary good exposure.
Michelle reported on the auction preparation, and stated good progress is being made. Members needing more raffle tickets to sell can obtain them from her. Sandy said they still need vegetable dishes, and she has some recipes if that is helpful.
Gale announced Friday is the Bow Halloween Party, and that event may be a good opportunity to sell raffle tickets for the auction. She also mentioned Donna visited the Franklin Club, and they are selling grapefruits and oranges as a fundraiser.
Sandy is still collecting checks for the foundation, and will mail them in next Friday.
Sergeant at Arms:
Bryant collected logo fines from Paul and Jon. Peter, Eric and Ben were fined for appearing in photos with no pin.
Happy Bucks:
Judy just got back from England where she did lots of walking through beautiful gardens and visited London, Oxford and Bath.
Bob Couch was leaving for the west coast to visit family friends that used to live in Bow.
(This is not correct. Bob was headed to Grand Manan Island in New Brunswick to work on their summer house and winterize it.)
Bill was happy the sun came out for his mother’s memorial service, and he was looking forward to a reunion with fraternity brothers.
Peter mentioned there are 9 new freshman members in the Interact Club.
Jon R. gave a happy twenty because his wife is doing fine after having a stent put in to open a clogged artery. Also, granddaughter Jackie was having her first dance.
Chris gracefully backed out of the Rotary Park cleanup so he could close up his camp.
Bryant mentioned a long time family friend, who is a Paul Harris Fellow, sold his house in Bow and is moving south.
Raffle:
Jeanie G. won the raffle, but was not successful pulling the joker.
Guest Speaker:
Dean introduced, Kurt Gurgler, the new principal at the elementary school. Mr. Gurgler is a native son of Bow. He was principal at the Grantham Elementary School when he left as part of a planned midlife crisis. He was able to spend time with his ailing father and build a barn. He described the barn construction process as a series of layers that needed to be completed before the barn could be finished. Once the barn was done, it was a tangible accomplishment. He equated the same layered process to what occurs in an elementary school and acknowledged this process is already working well in Bow. His goals for Bow Elementary are to instill the concept of mindfulness, create a sense of belonging and make students feel valued.
