Sunrise Rotary got to tour the most unique and quirky T-shirt shop in Cedar Rapids this beautiful Thursday morning! Raygun stays up to date on current events in Cedar Rapids and notices the quirks that make Cedar Rapids what it is! We were so thankful to learn more about this awesome shop!
Today, Sunrise Rotary had an AMAZING tour of Indian Creek Nature Center led by Lindsey Flannery. With a mission to create champions of nature, we got to see all the amazing ways Indian Creek Nature Center allows you to better understand and love the natural world! Check out their website to see their upcoming events such as the Maple Syrup Festival and all of the incredible programs they have to offer! http://indiancreeknaturecenter.org/
Bob Schmidt, franchise operator of the Lindale Chik-fil- A, joined us for our weekly Thursday morning meeting! And everyone walked away with one of these. EAT MOR CHIKIN!
Kathy Good with Family Caregivers Center of Mercy shared her amazing story and how her situation encouraged her to play a huge role in getting this facility going. Her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimers, and she soon found herself as his primary caregiver. Feeling exhausted with stress levels rising, she wondered how others were supporting themselves in this position. Family Caregivers Center of Mercy is a center that provides support for people who find themselves in care-giving position. Check out their website if you're interested in learning more or know someone who could benefit. http://www.mercycare.org/services/family-caregivers-center/
Today Josie Rozum, Marketing and Operations Manager at Dan and Debbie's Creamery, joined us for our Thursday morning meeting. Josie shared all the incredible work that goes on at this family-owned dairy farm from milking 150 cows each day, to making hand-crafted ice cream! Their cheese curds can be found in local Hy-Vee stores, and soon their milk too! Josie brought some delicious chocolate milk for use to try. We are happy to learn more and support local, family-owned businesses in this community, and are thankful for the incredible products they share with us.
Karen Hoyt from the Marion Arts Council joined us for our Thursday morning meeting and shared with us ImaginArt in the Alleys! ImaginArt in the Alleys will bring life, vitality and art to Uptown Marion alleyways, while creating a second entrance for businesses along 7th Avenue. The project will transform the alleys through a combination of infrastructure improvements and the installation of creative projects. It is a collaborative effort between ArtPlace America, the City of Marion, and the Marion Chamber of Commerce. Read more about this incredible project here: http://www.cityofmarion.org/…/city-…/imaginart-in-the-alleys
The annual Sunrise Rotary Christmas party was great fun! Rotarian's and their family and friends sang Christmas Carols, and played Christmas charades all over a wonderful meal! We have a great time serving together and celebrating together. If you are at all interested in learning more, please let us know!
As Sunrise Rotary members rang the bells outside of the Hy-Vee on Edgewood Road, each was greeted warmly by Hy-Vee shoppers who would drop off dollar bills and loose change with a "God Bless You, or a Merry Christmas!" Our club feels very thankful to be living and serving in such an incredible community that truly cares about the individuals and families within it!
Do you know the Playtime Poppy Song? Then you might as well sing along! Thank you to Kristen for joining us for our morning meeting, and teaching us all about the incredible shows and education happening at Playtime Poppy Children's Theatre! A few of the upcoming shows include Elf Jr. The Musical beginning December 1, and Stellaluna at Washington High School in April.

Sunrise Rotary held their 15th annual Fall Banquet, and what an incredible turnout it was. We met our goal of raising $10,000! Thank you to everyone who spent the evening with us eating great food, bidding on great prizes, and raising money for charity. People walked away with ski passes, cabin getaways, a hog, and more! All of the money raised goes towards local area nonprofits Habitat for Humanity and Matthew 25 who serve Cedar Rapids through home building projects, as well as local high school scholarships and youth leadership programs. We had an absolute blast! Thank you to El Kahir Shrine Center for hosting us. Thank you, Justin Roberts, for emceeing the event!
November 10, we had the privilege of learning about the incredible services Bridgehaven Pregnancy Support Center offers to Cedar Rapids families. With a mission to empower choices for life through christ-centered education and support, they have services in place to help before, during and after pregnancy. Did you know Cedar Rapids ranks as the #1 best place in America to raise a child? or that it's ranked as the 6th best place to start a business? Scott Olson knows, and proudly reminded us of all of the incredible reasons why. Scott Olson, AIA, CFM, SIOR, Broker Associate, Skogman Commercials Group at the Penthouse Member, and Cedar Rapids City Council member was our guest speaker this morning. Rotarians walked away feeling encouraged, empowered and truly proud of the city we all call home. Just as we do every meeting, club president David Stoltenberg handed Olson the Rotarian 4-way test coin as thanks for joining us!

Dawn Brouwers, the Executive Director of His Hands Free Clinic was our engaging guest speaker today! She informed us of all the incredible medical care the clinic is providing for those without medical insurance in Linn County.

Our next service project is September 9th at Habitat for Humanity, however you do not have to be a Rotary member to come hang out with us that day! We still have slots available if you're interested in participating in the Build Day, and meeting some awesome area professionals!http://sunriserotary.cvhabitat.volunteerhub.com/events/index

Megan, our Sunrise Rotary Youth Exchange Student, is headed to Spain in just 18 days! She will be attending high school and living with a host family. To hear about it from Megan herself, watch the video below.
We had an excellent presentation from Jennifer Pruden about CVNB and all the exciting things happening there!
Every Thursday morning we have fantastic speakers and exciting announcements. This week was no exception! Michelle Bell, the District Foundation Chair, presented a $3,500 grant award to the club! Special thanks to Todd Manternach for all of his efforts writing and coordinating the grant! The grant will benefit Matthew 25 and be used for a walking tractor for the Urban Farm. We also had Hannah, a junior at Kennedy High School, share about her incredible experience at the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) Conference. We concluded our meeting with Susan Corrigan speaking on behalf of Saint Martin Land Company.

Who are we?
Sunrise is a group of professionals who come together to make a collective difference in their lives by learning more about area business’s, services, and activities that makes our community strong.  Our group is small enough that you will know everyone, and large enough to truly accomplish many great things in and around our community. We work hard.  We play hard.  Our weekly Rotary meetings are informative.  Our Social gatherings are fun and inclusive.  And above all, the causes that we support with a helping hand, fundraising, or donations gain the greatest benefits from our member’s efforts.

One of the most important aspects of Rotary is the official motto of Rotary “Service Above Self”. Sunrise prides itself in the many ways we fulfill this motto.

Sometimes, when Matthew 25 transforms a home, they transform a life. Sunrise Rotary was an active part of the transformation by serving during TRANSFORM 2016, a week devoted to working with volunteers to rehab homes, revitalize neighborhoods, and do various construction projects in the Taylor Neighborhood.
Drywall, painting and siding projects were completed during Transform 2016 week.  Thank you Volunteers!!

Stay up to date on the latest and greatest that Sunrise Rotary and it's members are doing!

El Salvador Kids

Sunrise is supporting and partnering with Daybreak Rotary for their El Salvador International project. I am very excited to have the opportunity to support and partner with a successful local club, while at the same time achieving our club goal of participating in an international project.

Our club has responded to Member's giving and provided a match for this project.
