This past week was very much a mixed bag for our club, carrying both moments of sadness and reasons for quiet optimism.

We were deeply saddened by the passing of Bill Klaassen, Charter and Honorary Member of our club, who died on Wednesday, two days after the funeral of his beloved wife Sophia, his partner of 68 years. Bill epitomised Service above Self. His contribution to this club, and to Toowoomba, was significant and enduring. His legacy can be seen most clearly in the Laurel Bank Scented Park Gardens, an important and lasting project of this club, to which Bill made a substantial personal financial contribution.

Bill lived through generation-defining history. He once told me of his childhood in a small town in the Netherlands, and of witnessing German army atrocities against civilians. It was a harrowing account that left a lasting impression. Bill saw much, endured much, and still chose a life of service, generosity, and responsibility. We are sad to lose him, and our hearts are sore for our club mate Roger and his siblings.

We were also saddened to hear of the passing of Harry Martin. Our thoughts are with Jeff and Sandy Martin and their family, particularly Craig and Chrissie, as they navigate this loss.

On Thursday, the club held its AGM. Allan S presented the financial reports from his time as Treasurer, and the results were pleasing. The club is in very good financial health. Rusty M also provided a brief debrief of the OBG and its remarkable financial success. It is worth repeating what an outstanding job Rusty and his committee did, and it was pleasing to hear reference made to the “next OBG”, a clear sign it is in good hands.

And then some very good news, greeted with a chorus of “about time”. Our VP Peter Nalder has put his hand up for President Elect for 2026–27. Pete has served on the Board many times, including in the critical role of Secretary. He is the right person for the job, and now is the time to step forward and show him your support.

Lastly, I wish you and yours a safe and enjoyable Christmas, filled with the love of family and friends.

Two upcoming social events are booked in.
Friday 23rd of January from 5pm at the Federal Hotel in James Street for a drink and or dinner.  No cost and RSVP will be required in January. A good opportunity to bring a friend who maybe interested in Rotary along.
Sunday 15th February from 3pm to 5pm at Matho’s place, 11 Belgium St, South Toowoomba. A gin tasting to answer questions like tonic or soda, is there a sipping gin, how is gin made etc. There will be snacks provided. Cost to be confirmed in January and numbers will be limited to 22 people. Club members get priority, but the event will be opened to non-members in early February if not full.
Cheers Craig
