Time. Funny concept. We’re all allocated the same amount, but some people “…have the time…”, others “…can’t spare the time…”, and when it comes to mischief, some have “…too much time on their hands…”. As volunteers, time is often front of mind — we’re always weighing up how much we can give to Rotary.
Duty. Another head-scratcher. What is it, really? For me, it’s simple: it’s an action you feel obligated to perform. As Rotarians, I like to think we understand our duty to contribute — and more often than not, that contribution is our time.
At our Club Assembly on Thursday, members gathered around their Directors and committees to work out how best to give of their time. I asked each committee to come up with initiatives that will engage and energise — and be fun. Because if we enjoy doing our Rotary duty, it makes the decision to give our time that much easier. And others will want to join in too.
Initiatives take planning, and a big part of any plan is the when. One thing discussed at our Board meeting on Tuesday 8 July was how to make the club calendar more accessible. ClubRunner is the right tool, but there’s still a bit to be done to get it working well for us. The good news is there’s movement — the “Events” section is starting to fill up. I encourage you to take a look.
Also have a read of the minutes from Thursday’s meeting. A few date claimers are mentioned, including the upcoming Jewells working bee this Saturday, 19 July. I’ll be there — and I encourage you to come along and share the load. More hands = less time for everyone. And that’s fair.
Lastly, to our two friends whose sands of time have finally run through the hourglass of life: heartfelt thanks to the many members who attended the funeral for our friend Peter Sommer and his wife Lucy. Jock Psaros’ family has advised the Club that, in accordance with his wishes, a private service will be held. In time, the Club will honour Jock’s memory at a lunch, to which Viola and members of the former Toowoomba West club — the “Westies” — will be invited.
