At last Thursday’s meeting, our guest speaker Dr Curtis Rayment, delivered a very powerful presentation on the role of the attitude of men in the complex issue of domestic and family violence. He presented a very compelling back story to his involvement in this area and his choice to stand up and make a difference. I am sure that I am not the only one who hopes his program “It’s a Mans Issue” can make changes for the better.
It was my honour to be able to coordinate the collation of money from a variety of Rotary sources and present the money to Curtis. The “big” cheque said $6000 but the actual amount will be $6250. I would like to detail the break-up of the money as I feel it is important that everyone who contributed is acknowledged;
  • “Say No to DV Walk” on 28th of March (in the rain) raised just under $1500 in donations. The District  topped this contribution up to $3000 in total.
  • RC Toowoomba East                $1500
  • RC Toowoomba Garden City $1000
  • RC Toowoomba North              $500
  • RC Lockyer Valley                        $200
  • Rotarian from RC Toowoomba City $50
Curtis was blown away because he thought he was only coming to receive $1500. It was great to have 5 other local Rotary Clubs represented at our meeting and I am very grateful that DG Sue Mulraney and her husband John came up from Brisbane for the meeting.
The meeting also saw a couple of members attending for the first time in a while. It was great to have Pete Burrows and Dave Groves join us for the meeting. My thanks also go to Mark Redmond who happily stepped up to act as Chair for the meeting with no notice and to Craig Mathieson who revelled in his role as acting sergeant and peeled off a couple of his infamous Dad jokes.

It will be a busy week for our Club this week ;
  • The UniSQ Science & Engineering Challenge will be on from Tuesday to Thursday. My thanks again to Geoff Kapernick for willingly chasing members to fill out the volunteer schedule.
  • The Annual Charity Golf Day is this Friday the 23rd. There are 22 teams scheduled to play and the weather forecast looks pretty hopeful at this stage. Rod Brown has 22 prizes in the multi-draw raffle and he and the boys will be chasing you to purchase tickets.
  • We are calling it a President’s drinks on the deck at the Golf Club at Middle Ridge starting at 4.30pm on Friday. Come along a see the presentations to the winners and the presentation of the cheque to the beneficiary of this year’s Charity Golf Day – Yellowbridge.
  • Phil Gillam will conducting a gardening detail out at Teen Challenge on Saturday morning – he wants to really finish off the job nicely with some hedging plants around the Yarning Circle.

I am looking forward to a big Thursday of Rotary activities. I am looking forward to my rostered activity at the Science and Engineering Challenge on Thursday morning and then I am looking forward to our guest speaker at out lunchtime meeting. Professor Glen Coleman is Deputy Vice Chancellor our at the University of Southern Queensland. I have known Glen for over 40 years since we were colleagues at Vet School back in the 80’s.

Regards
Alistair
