This week’s gab is a mix of good, not-so-good, and sad news.
First, the good...
On Thursday 3 July, it was great to catch up with 21 RCTE mates at our first evening meeting at the Toowoomba Sports Club. We met in the same comfortable room we’ve used before — the atmosphere was relaxed, noisy, and full of laughter. It was especially good to see a few familiar faces who’ve struggled to make lunchtime meetings.
Several members were unable to attend on the evening as they were welcoming the new leadership team of the Innerwheel who had their changeover on Thursday 03 July. Good luck to President Maureen Burke and Jnr Vice President Alison Beattie.
A special mention goes to Matt W, whose business with Sonja — Toni's Continental Butcher & Smallgoods — has taken home bronze medals for their Traditional Croatian Sudjuk and Traditional Slovenian Kransky at the DFV Quality International Competition for Sausages and Ham 2025. A fantastic achievement.
Fellowship was long, and the business side brief. You’ll find the details in the minutes that follow, but one update to note: the Downs Club has increased lunch prices by $2.50. From 10 July, lunch meetings will cost $37.50 per person.
And now, the sad...
We were shocked to learn of the sudden passing of our member Peter Sommer on Wednesday 2 July. Peter joined the club in 1998–99, served as Treasurer, and supported the St Saviour's Interact Club. In recent years, his attendance was limited as he cared for his wife Lucy. He was also long-time Treasurer for Save the Children’s Toowoomba Branch and a board member of the Kath Dickson Centre.
Tragically, we also learnt that Lucy passed away days later. We are heartsore for their daughter Bec, and condolences have been passed on.
To close a difficult week, we mourn the passing of our dear friend and honorary member, Jock Psaros. Jock’s Rotary service began in 1974 and spanned Inverell, West Toowoomba, and RCTE. Our heartfelt sympathy to Viola and Jock’s family.
A fee will apply to any member late with an apology regardless of whether the number attending on the meeting day of the meeting is over, under or equal to what the Club Secretary submitted to the Downs Club. This fee will only apply to meetings at the Downs Club or any other club meeting where attendance numbers have to be stipulated prior to the meeting.
A Club member will be charged a meal fee of $20 if they
fail to submit any apology before 11am on Tuesday for the meeting the following Thursday (48 hrs later)
need to submit a late apology due to changed circumstance.
Fail to show up after indicating they would be present.
The members owing a fee of $20 will notified by the Club Secretary and Club Treasurer via an emailed
Late apology fee notice.
The fee can be paid by direct credit into the RCTE Club account or by adding $20 to the $35 meal fee at the next club meeting
