Engagement. It's a word that gets thrown around a lot in Rotary circles, but what does it actually mean, and why does it matter?

At its simplest, engagement is the difference between membership and participation. We all know it exists on a spectrum. At one end, the member who shows up week after week, rolls up their sleeves, recruits a friend, and goes home energised. At the other, the member whose name is on the books but who we rarely see at meetings or at a working bee. Most of us sit somewhere in between, and that's fine - life has seasons, and what we can give shifts over time.

Membership and engagement aren't the same thing, and Rotary done well isn't a subscription service. It's a community. The research on this is consistent; people who are actively involved in community organisations report stronger social connections, greater sense of purpose, and better overall wellbeing.  That rings true from what I've observed in this club over the years.

From my point of view, engagement comes down to three things: feeling welcome, feeling useful, and feeling connected to something bigger than yourself. When a member finds their niche - whether that's the hands-on project work, the fellowship side of things, or the committee planning; they tend to stick around and bring others with them.

The flip side is also true. When members feel like spectators rather than participants, the connection fades. That's not a criticism of anyone; it's a reminder that engagement is a two-way street. It's on each of us to reach out, to include, to ask the quieter member what they'd enjoy getting involved in.

As we head into the last quarter of the Rotary year, I'd genuinely welcome your thoughts - on engagement, or anything else on your mind. Please feel free to reach out to me directly, or to any of the Directors. We're here to listen, and your input shapes the club we all share.

See you Thursday.
