At last Thursday’s meeting, our guest speaker, Professor Glen Coleman gave us a very pragmatic view of the challenges facing the University system at present. He also gave us an insight into some of the novel ideas of what the University might deliver to students in the near future. Glen is Deputy Vice Chancellor out at the University of Southern Queensland. I have known Glen for over 40 years since we were colleagues at Vet School back in the 80’s and it is interesting to reflect on the different career pathways we have taken in our profession.

Geoff Kapernick has included a comprehensive report on the UniSQ Science & Engineering Challenge last week. My thanks again to Geoff Kapernick for willingly chasing members to fill out the volunteer schedule and to Phillip Charles, Phil Gillam, Adrian Bonica and Graham Christensen for their time.

The Board has approved a donation to the annual winter appeal for the St Lukes Parish Pantry. We have again given a $1000 contribution to this very worthy cause. The Club has also donated 10 MOM Project toiletry care packs to the St Lukes outreach services (value of $200). The MOM Project is an initiative championed by Nim Prasad (Wife of PDG Jitendra Prasad)

The Annual Charity Golf Day held last Friday had the best weather. There were 22 teams and some low scores were recorded. Unfortunately The Rangeside Vets team didn’t worry the scorers in the successful way – The young golf pro got the giggles when tallying up the score from my son Lachlan and I and loudly pronounced that we had come dead last! A fact I didn’t feel the need to authenticate.
Rod Brown had 21 prizes in the multi-draw raffle and he and the boys chased hard all day to get people to purchase tickets.
It was my honour to be able to present Adrian Bonica with a $10,000 cheque to be used by YellowBridge in their home maintenance program.
A big thank you to Steve Davis and John Liley who were instrumental in driving the annual Charity Golf Day. Thanks also to Rod Brown, Graham Christensen, Ian Humphrey, Dave Groves, Harry Spencer, and Geoff Somerville for working hard on the day.

Phil Gillam lead a gardening detail out at Teen Challenge on Saturday morning. He finished off the yarning circle and firepit nicely with some hedging plants. Thanks also to the other guys who went out to help Phil.

Also on Saturday morning, Peter Nalder supervised the pressure cleaning of the shipping container at the Tentworld site. The shipping container is now ready for a paint job. One step closer to being the new home to store our club gear.

I am looking forward to the guest speaker at out lunchtime meeting this week – Furaha Iranzi who was our candidate we sponsored to RYTS late last year. She will be speaking of her experience at the Rotary Youth Transition Seminar.

Regards
Alistair
