Thursday’s meeting was excellent, with Paul Roger, Chairman of ShelterBox Australia, offering a compelling insight into an organisation that exemplifies Rotary service globally.
For those unfamiliar with ShelterBox, it began 25 years ago in a small Rotary club in Cornwall, England. Since then, it has grown into an international disaster relief organisation that has supported more than three million people in 100 countries after disasters and conflict, providing emergency shelter and essential supplies to families who have lost everything.
Before the meeting, Tony J and willing assistants erected a ShelterBox emergency shelter in the dining room of the Downs Club. With heavy rain falling across Toowoomba that day, it was inspired thinking.
The demonstration highlighted an important point: when disaster strikes, shelter must be more than a tent. It provides safety, dignity, security, and a first step towards recovery.
I was pleased that our club could donate $4,000 to ShelterBox Australia on the day. That gift will fund four emergency shelter kits and help families facing circumstances most of us cannot imagine. ShelterBox is a strong example of Rotary values in action.
On Saturday, 14 willing lads turned out for the final Bunnings sausage sizzle of this Rotary year. I drew the early shift and claimed the warm spot at the barbecue, but despite the cold, dreary start, the banter was strong and the laughter constant. As I have said before, fellowship is a big part of this club’s secret sauce.
There were also several casualty reports from the front lines this week. We wish Cameron A, Steve D, Alistair W, and Paul S a speedy recovery after various visits to the medical mechanics, some requiring more substantial servicing than others.
We also extend our condolences to Matt W on the passing of his father, Clive, on 24 May. Our thoughts are with Matt and his family.
Lastly, I am cracking the whip: please purchase your Changeover tickets now. If you cannot attend, please let PE Peter N know.
This Thursday’s meeting is in the evening. As requested, there will be a little more structure, including a Sergeant’s Session and a guest speaker. Partners and guests are very welcome.
See you on Thursday.
