RCO Bulletin January 6, 2020
RCO Bulletin, January 6, 2019

Meeting started at 6:30, led by Mike Henry, who invoked a clause from the club’s bylaws stating that when the President is not available, the President-Elect shall stand in for him. (Ed. But there was no need for "excuses"; Mike did his normal great job.)

Mike: Toast to the Queen and Canada.

Anthem: O Canada, led by George F.

Grace: George F, who invoked a wonderful Grace, especially designed for the New year.

Mahendra: We have 17 members plus 4 guests for a total of 21.

Introduction of Guests:

  • Tracey Ehl: expert in indigenous studies, Vice Chair, Halton Region Social Services
  • Erdem Aydar: member in Turkey; wishes to transfer to an Oakville club
  • Mitch Sabsabi: Soon to become an RCO member
  • Kimberly Gibbons

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • A special thank you to Dana for producing an excellent RCO Newsletter.
  • Remember the Paul Harris Awards Dinner on January 29 at LeDome. An invitation will appear on Tuesday in your mailbox. We have two award winners this year:
  • Louis Breithaupt
  • George and Tammy Couto
To encourage early sign-up, we are offering an “early bird” special: $50 if you sign up on or before Jan 17; $60 thereafter. Watch for your invitation!
  • Lama and Mike will be meeting with RCOW to finalize the planning for the Golf Tournament. One of our Paul Harris award winners, the Coutus, provided the Food and Wine Pairing for 8 at last year’s tournament, which had many enthusiastic bidders.
  • Mahendra reminded us about the Speakers Series, this year at Appleby College on April 28th. The retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will be our featured speaker. Tickets are being printed; we will bring some next week to the Club Assembly. They can be ordered online now through EventBrite.

Induction Ceremony: Mike Henry inducted our newest member, Stu Lam. Stu’s sponsor was Rod Craig (George V stood in for Rod.).

Happy Bucks/Fines: Ralf Soeder; collected mightily by asking who had seen the National Anthem sung by Canada’s hockey players. Many had seen the game; few saw the singing.

Introduction of the Speaker: Larry Chester

Speaker: Kimberley Gibbons – Ontario Council for International Cooperation
Kimberly spoke about OCIC’s goals: Focus on sustainability (SDG) and women’s issues.
Canada is a world leader in progressive policy but has decreased funding. Call to action: We need to increase Canada’s contribution either through government or through the activities of NDGs and charitable organizations, such as Rotary and others.

Thank the Speaker: Amin Kawr

50/50 Draw: Manny Pereira’s number was drawn by our speaker, Kimberly Gibbons, in tonight’s 50/50 draw.
We also held the semi-annual draw for 50/50 contest winners for the second half of 2019. Our new member, Stuart Lam, was asked to draw the winning name. The winner was Amin Kawr who collected $150.

Next Meeting: 20th January 2020 – Club Assembly

Closing toast to friends and Rotarians: Mike
