Rotary Club of Oakville Bulletin for April 24th
Club Assembly at 17 Stewart St
6:30pm: Tareq opened the meeting by ringing his glass.
Graham led us in Grace, followed by Frank leading us in O’ Canada.
20 members shared in pizza and wings delivered by Pizza Pizza. Unfortunately yours truly, Ralf, didn’t order quite enough for any seconds :-(
Bob Dodds handled the Fine Master duty by quizzing the members on Romeo Dallaire which resulted in numerous fines. We need to be better prepared for the next meeting.
Happy Bucks were declared by the following:
  • Several were happy for Bob’s Fines which incorporated a promo of our upcoming Speaker Series
  • Rudy will be hosting 8 former University buddies at his home this weekend which makes him very happy. His wife, Lena, would beg to differ....?
  • Ralf was happy that he and Kimberley visited their daughter in London UK over Easter weekend.
  • Judy had another successful project the Dominican Republic conducted by Interact students from New Brunswick
Announcements:
Manny reminded us of the upcoming Bursary event where the 3 Oakville Rotary clubs are combining to offer numerous bursaries for graduating high school students at a joint Education Awards Dinner on May 25th.
Ralf thanked Michael Bissauge, Michael Conway, Nada & Tareq Nasser, and Erika & Klaus Simon who all contributed greatly to the success of this year’s Camp Enterprise.
Membership Minute:
Ralf asked that members write down any name that comes to mind when he describes a potential member candidate:
  • A parent who has a child who is about to graduate from either high school, University, or about to move out of the home. That parent should now have more time to be involved in their community.
  • An individual who has started a new job. They may wish to represent their new firm by being involved in a community service organization like Rotary.
  • Anyone who has retired recently likely has time to contribute to their community.
Ralf encouraged members to contact the people whose names were triggered and invite them out for a coffee to chat about getting involved in Rotary. If desired, a member from the Membership committee be happy to join in that initial meeting.

Classification Talk:
Michael Bissauge presented a brief and informative Classification talk utilizing Power Point. Michael and his wife Meng have 3 daughters who attend Ecole St. Marie in Oakville, a french elementary school.
Michael has a Masters Degree in Nuclear Engineer. In the past he has worked on Nuclear Reactor and Transmissions. Currently he is in sales of Industrial valves for both water and oil.
Michael also enjoys playing the cello, diving underwater, sky diving and travel in general. He has been active in Boy & Girl Scouts in both France and China.
Club Assembly:
Judy has created numerous sub committees to assist in the promotion of our next Speaker Series Event with Romeo Dallaire on Monday, May 29th. Some of these committees met after our meeting to strategize efforts to promote the event.
Len updated the members on the proceeds from TSH’s sale of property in 2016. The government has approved the creation of a foundation trust specific to these funds dated Dec. 2016. Having a trust offers preferred tax treatment of the proceeds from the sale of the real estate from TSH. Various institutions ( banks) bid to have the opportunity to manage the funds where one of the criteria included sponsoring the Speaker Series to the tune of $10,000. Scotia Bank submitted an offer which includes the sponsorship bid. The TSH Board will be meeting shortly to discuss further.
Myra reminded us of the challenges last year for the RCO Midnight Madness event where unexpectedly access to electrical power was not offered to RCO. Applications for this year’s event on July 14th need to be submitted by April 28th. However RCO is unsure if access to power will be given.  Myra has a meeting next week to confirm and received an extension on the application to next week. Myra reminded us that the objective of the Midnight Madness event is public awareness of what Rotary does in the local community. Any funds raised are to simply cover the costs of the event.
Rod updated every one on our finances. Essentially everything is basically on budget. Any members who would like to see the current statements can e-mail Rod and he will e-mail you a copy. The board is entertaining bids for an auditor as it is believed that improved services are available. No decision has been made yet to change auditors from Chuck Hamel.
Tareq closed the meeting by offering a Toast to Friends & Rotarians around the world.
