Minutes of June 24

President Ralf opened the meeting at 6:30 pm.

Susan Howard said grace.

Frank Morewood led the singing of O Canada. (Right on key!)

Ralf proposed a toast to the Queen and Canada.

Terry Scott reported the attendance of 26 Rotarians and 11 guests.

The guests were introduced by people at their tables.

Dinner was served.

Following dinner there were several announcements.

Susan Howard was wished Happy Birthday.

Ralf reminded everyone of the District Changeover on July 3 at Caledon east.

The Rotaract Club  is holding a soccer tournament on August 17 with the theme of decades so dress up in your favorite decade! (Will that be decadent?)

John Sawyer, ED of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce, sent the club a letter of appreciation for our support of the Chamber’s golf tournament.

Doug Lang reported that the first Oakville Probus club was started 25 years ago.

He also said that Al Histed is doing well and that Harry James, an Iroquois Ridge student, has been visiting him.

Frank reported on our membership for the year. The goal was to have a net gain of 6 new members each year. We are close with 5 new members for each of the past two years.

Lucas Preston conducted the fines and Happy Bucks.

Congratulations to Liz Behrens for joining the Board of the Kerr St. BIA.

Lucas announced his resignation from the club as he is moving to Toronto. We made him promise to visit us often!

Ralf announced that 3 members have added another sapphire to their Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship pins for their contributions to Foundation. They are Janice Tobia, Judy Warrington, and Wayne Snyder.

On behalf of the club three members were awarded Paul Harris Fellowships for their outstanding service to the club.

Lucas has been a key player in the Million Dollar Hole in One fundraiser. He has also played a critical role in the operation of Camp Enterprise. Club meetings are always more lively when Lucas’ sense of humour is present.

Linda Hill has been our efficient secretary, key communicator with RI, the facilities, and caterer. She is also our webmaster. Linda has looked after all the details and made sure things got done. She looks after nametags, organizes chaperones for Camp Enterprise, and handles much of our publicity.

Wayne Snyder initiated a strategic plan for the club which has become our blueprint and given clear focus to the club’s objectives. He is a key person in the Million Dollar Hole in One getting the most sponsors and prizes. He also had the highest ticket sales. All this while being Past President.

Congratulations all!

President Ralf reviewed the past year.

He thanked the Board for their support and direction in achieving his 3 goals – having fun, increasing membership, and securing financial resources.

On the last item there is still more work to be done.

The club met the criteria to receive the Presidential Citation this year:

holding a Peace Forum in cooperation with the other Oakville clubs on

January 28,

following up on the club survey (100% return!) to increase the diversity of the club,

Increasing service with Judy , Neil Smith and his wife working in the Dominican Republic; creating public awareness of polio by handing out flyers at the GO stations October 24; and locally planting trees on October 27,

Being active in New Generations through RYLA (host club this year!), Rotaract, Interact, and bursaries,

Collaborating with BBBSH bowling and Rotary in the DR,

Improving our image in the community through ads in the Beaver (4 new members!), media at the Bursary dinner, social networking on Facebook and Linked In, membership in the Chamber of Commerce, $20,000 to the new hospital, Camp Enterprise and Python’s Pit.

Other significant achievements have been a strong program with good speakers, hosting the Brazil GSE team and continued management of the seniors’ residences.

Ralf thanked all the members for their hard work this year and outlined some targets for the coming year.

We should look for more hands-on projects and find ways to work with our seniors.

We need to continue to work hard on fundraising.

Mentoring our new members should be a focus next year.

We need an anchor project internationally.

We need to develop the leadership within our club.

Presently we need a manager for the clubrunner website, director of the Youth and Vocation portfolio, an assistant treasurer, an assistant secretary and a president-elect. Rudy will welcome all volunteers!

President Ralf introduced our new President Rudy Habesch and presented him with the President’s pin. Rudy presented Ralf with the Past President’s pin.

Fred Giroux won $25 in the 50/50 draw.

Alistair Yule announced that there were Canadian Open full-week passes left over from the Golf Tournament which members could bid on. (See note at the beginning of the minutes.)

President Rudy thanked the June pod and proposed a toast to Friends and Rotarians around the World.

THERE WILL BE NO MEETING NEXT WEEK ON CANADA DAY, JULY1.

SEE YOU ALL AT SUSAN HOWARD’S HOME THE FOLLOWING WEEK

JULY 8.

Happy Canada Day Everyone!
