ARTIST STATEMENT - LUIS RAFAEL SANDOVAL

My work is an exploration of abstraction as a living, intuitive process. I begin each painting without a predetermined direction, guided instead by a state of “not knowing” that allows discovery to unfold on the canvas. This openness invites spontaneity—layered colors, gestures, textures, and shapes evolve through movement, erasure, contradiction, and renewal.

Growing up in Caracas and continuing my artistic journey in the United States, I’ve been shaped by the emotional force of Abstract Expressionism and the disciplined tension of Latin American abstraction. These influences merge with my own search for rhythm, energy, and balance. I am drawn to the interplay of vibrant color, organic forms, and transparent layers that suggest depth without defining it.

I approach each painting as a conversation with the materials—one that reflects both struggle and harmony. The process is an ongoing negotiation between control and release, intention and accident. I never replicate previous works; instead, I allow each piece to emerge with its own identity, shaped by the moment of creation.

Ultimately, my goal is connection. I hope viewers feel the energy embedded in the work and experience a sense of wonder, imagination, and inner resonance. Abstraction, for me, is not an escape from reality but a way of engaging with the human spirit—inviting others to see, feel, and reflect beyond the visible.
