We had our beginning on a dark and stormy Night more than 50 years ago ~

On the day Bellaire/Southwest Rotary Club was officially chartered - - June 27, 1957 - - Hurricane Audrey hit Louisiana, causing approximately $1 billion dollars in damage and killing 400+ people. Happily, things have looked UP since then for our club, which is 'on-the-grow' and plays a vital humanitarian role in the Southwest Houston community.

For our 25th anniversary, we received our unique, silver-plated bell, and, for our golden anniversary, we gilded the bell's finial in purest gold. We believe we're the only Rotary club in the world that gongs its meetings to order with such a beautiful icon!

Dr. Bob Ellis, who served as BSWH Rotary President in 1965-1966, is the only Past District Governor from our club.

In 2006, Nan Wagoner of our club received the Public Image Citation from Rotary International President Carl-Wilhelm Steinhammar, which was one of only 180 such commendations awarded worldwide. Also that year, we fielded the first Immunization Clinic that targeted Houston's Gulfton SuperNeighborhood, and The Rotarian international Rotary magazine featured the Bellaire/SW Houston Club for the first time, highlighting the Success at Work program we developed.

In 2007, we celebrated our Golden Anniversary with a "Blast from the Past" banquet at the Westin Galleria, featuring all things from the 1950s, and we received the "Best Newsletter in the District" award.

In 2008, under President Nan Wagoner we were named the BEST Mid-Sized Club in District 5890 for the first time, and Dr. Phil Nauert of our club also received the national Cliff Dochterman Award.

In 2009 under President Bernie Satterwhite, we not only captured the BEST CLUB award for a second year in a row but also received the District 'Make Dreams Real' award.
