Navigating Peace through Prosperity Using Foundations of Communication Styles
Feb. 16, 2023 12:00 p.m.
ABOUT TIM SULLIVAN As an Air Force Brat in a family of 9, money was tight growing up. By age 11, Tim was running a 100 paper Chronicle route in rural Pearland with side offers of vegetable seeds and greeting cards for his Eagle Scout. Tim then began working for Six Flags Astroworld where he learned that hard work would take him to open a water park in Miami. Managing teams of hundreds of kids would lead to running a team of IT professionals across the US. After founding a Lotus Notes consultancy with his husband Doug Winnie, they began putting in systems for businesses such as Enron, ExxonMobil, HL&P and industries across the spectrum. Having that inside view of how businesses run led to the current work of owning ActionCOACH Houston, a coaching and training company focused on Leadership, Management, and Sales. Today, Tim’s focus is on economic development through small business ownership – ensuring legislation on both hills support all the people across the community. Tim lives and breathes Astroworld’s motto of “We put you in the middle of fun” with his 15 exchange students as they’ve explored places like the Grand Canyon, Key West, New York City and the Caribbean. Tim and his team have reached a very rare place in the ActionCOACH community, the #1 Business Firm in the world! By leveraging their past experiences along with the ActionCOACH toolkit, ActionCOACH has ranked them #1 amongst all the firms in the 84 countries they coach. A Discussion About Houston's Future
Mar. 09, 2023 12:00 p.m.
ABOUT AMANDA EDWARDS Amanda Edwards is a native Houstonian and a former At-Large City Council Member. Her hands-on, results-oriented servant leadership is focused on empowering residents and obtaining results. Amanda is an accomplished attorney with extensive municipal finance experience, a grassroots public servant, and an effective community advocate. Amanda is also the founder of a community non-profit that empowers various groups ranging from seniors to women. As a City Council Member, Amanda has proven herself to be an effective and relentless advocate. With an eye toward the future and a vision of an economy that works for all Houstonians, she has led citywide efforts to cultivate technology, innovation, and public transit. In fact, Houston’s new Innovation District (part of the recommendations stemming from the Tech & Innovation Task Force Amanda initiated and led) is now under construction, with the first phase of it (The Ion) now complete. Amanda has also led Houston’s efforts to reduce the disparities in accessing capital faced by women and minorities who own small businesses in Houston. Amanda now leads BEAMW (the Business Ecosystem Alliance for Minorities & Women) to provide a wide array of support, including one-on-one financial counseling services for small business owners, among other things. Amanda’s experience as a municipal finance attorney proved invaluable during her tenure on the City Council as the city grappled with budgetary deficits and pension reform. Amanda served as the Vice Chair of the Budget & Fiscal Affairs Committee, authored numerous measures to ensure more accountability and good stewardship of the city’s limited resources, and helped lead budgetary sessions analyzing the city’s $5.1 billion budget. Amanda also served on the Economic Development Committee. Amanda graduated from Eisenhower High School in Aldine ISD. She earned a B.A. in Political Science from Emory University in 2004. While at Emory, Amanda served as a Community Building and Social Change Fellow, and she worked in six Community Development Corporations (CDCs). After graduating from Emory, she worked for Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee in Washington, D.C. Amanda went on to earn her J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she was a student attorney for the Criminal Justice Institute. |

Every Day, Every Hour (Casa de Esperanza)
Apr. 13, 2023 12:00 p.m.
ABOUT LILY FRAUTSCHI Growing up in Houston, Lily attended the Awty International School, fully immersed in the French academic program until graduation. She then attended the University of Virginia, where she planned to only major in History, took an intensive Russian course summer of 2020 (some decided to learn to knit or bake bread during the lockdowns--why not learn the Cyrillic alphabet instead), and decided to cram a second major, Russian Language & Literature, into her last two years. Unable to dedicate herself to academic education alone, Lily held positions in the school’s flagship chorus; their chamber singers; a translation program for young students; and the swing dancing club. Deciding she had read a sufficient number of books (no matter the language of said books) for a while, Lily committed to a one-year-long fostering position at Casa de Esperanza. She has taken care of sixteen children in need of safety and love in the past nine months, and will be attending William & Mary Law School come August to pursue a legal career centered around foster children. |

Guerrero Clinic

ABOUT WALTER BRANSON Walter Branson was born on August 2, 1949 in Louisville, Kentucky. Walter is an only child adopted by Jack M. and Mary Ruby Branson, now McKeever. Jack was an insulator and in 1950 moved his family to Velasco Texas, now Freeport, when he took a job with a contractor at Dow. His father passed away from a heart attack when Walter was 9 years old. This began hard years for Walter and his mom. His Mother worked as a soda-jerk at Garrett’s Pharmacy making $35 a week. Walter helped by picking up bottes and selling them for 2 cents each at the Minute Market. Walter attended St. Mary’s Catholic school, Velasco Elementary and Freeport Junior High. When he was 11, the contractors who ate lunch at the Drug store offered to bring him to work with them to earn some extra income. There he learned valuable construction skills and became a handy-man and contracted small jobs throughout his years at Brazosport High School. Walter went on to Sam Houston State University. While in college, Walter worked for a couple of senior pre-med guys that had a painting contracting business. When they left for medical school, they gave him the business for free. Walter also worked at the Prison Hospital and became friends with the nurse anesthetist, who offered him a partnership if he would go to nursing and anesthesia school. In 1974 a spot became open for him at Galveston college of nursing. Walter gave the business away in Huntsville and moved back home to attend nursing school. With his biology degree from Sam Houston, he only needed one course. He managed a mobile home park, worked the emergency room at Brazosport Memorial, did side construction jobs, started a collection service for local doctors and started an insurance physical business during this time. Walter requires only five hours of sleep per night, but inactivity results in inability to stay awake. After working in the operating room at the hospital with the anesthesiologist, Walter realized that sitting monitoring patients, was the wrong path for him. He continued to work at the emergency room for five years while building his business. Walter ran Branson Construction out of his home’s 2-car garage for a while. In 1982 he purchased a 15,000 sq. ft. building in Lake Jackson. Branson Construction consisted of residential, commercial, and industrial contracting. In 1980, Hurricane Allen hit Brazosport and Walter got a call to repair a beach house. After Walter gave him the repair bid, the owner said he was tired of worrying about storms so Walter suggested that he sell him the house as is. He paid seventeen thousand dollars. This would be the first of 61 properties now owned under the Branson Real Estate auspices. Walter married Elsa on March 13, 2010 in Lake Jackson Texas. The Branson’s have kids between them. Beth Ann Davis, Kellie Sims, Nathan Sims, Sara (deceased), Meghan (deceased), Blake Branson, Pamela Mascolo and Valeria Rodriquez. This big family also includes ten grandchildren. Walter had a portable carpet cleaning machine for the rental houses, but in 2004 he purchased his first truck mount, dehumidifiers, fans, and some other restoration equipment that began Branson Xtremly Clean. On the giving end of things, Walter has been an active Rotarian since March, 1982. He has served as President of the Brazosport Rotary Club, served on a District Committee to improve Mexican/American relations, chaired several District Ambassador Committees, has been “Rotarian of the Year” for Brazosport Rotary as well as for District 5890. Walter was also awarded the “Service Above Service” award in 1996. He is a Major Donor to the Rotary Foundation, a Paul Harris Fellow and benefactor. Walter is currently the Director of the Guerrero Surgery and Education Center located in Guerrero, Chihuahua, Mexico, a Rotarian enterprise, which benefits the less fortunate of that region. Walter always tried to give his customers outstanding service, a great product and always gives them a human to speak with. After 54 years in business and over 20,000 customers, that philosophy seems to be working. His advice to others is, “Hard work, Hard work, Hard work. Honesty, and Integrity” He believes his faith in God, following the Boy Scout Law, and the Rotary motto and four-way test are good principles to follow. As you can see his career path was an evolving journey and after 20 years in business, he went back to Le Tourneau University and got a degree in business. He said, “if you are going to be a businessman you should learn something about it.” |
