The State of Business In Texas
Aug. 25, 2022 12:00 p.m.
A torchbearer for the business community, Glenn Hamer has a proven track record for success in the public policy arena. He testified before the 87th Legislature, second day on the job, and made meaningful contributions to the passage of top legislative priorities for the business community (including broadband expansion, “Keep Texas Trucking,” pandemic liability protections, and preventing astronomical increases in Unemployment Insurance). Since the pandemic, Glenn has made it his mission to visit more local chambers of commerce than anyone else on the planet. He connects businesses, small and large, with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to protect Texas’ pro-business climate. Glenn is proud to be a part of the Texas Camino Real District Export Council, American Society of Mexico, and National Immigration Forum. He also serves on the board for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and chairs its committee of 100 (CCC100). Founder and Executive Director of Bel Inizio
Sep. 15, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Located in Houston, Texas, Bel Inizio, (which means beautiful beginning in Italian), is a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged women develop self-confidence and life skills through fitness and nutrition. Participants train to complete a 5K, which helps prepare them for the ultimate race — the race for a better life.” Houston has a generous giving community and great compassion for those in need. Bel Inizio has emergency shelters, transitional housing, and half-way houses. The agencies offer case workers, recovery programs, and job skills training. What gets lost, and is critically needed, is helping individuals achieve the self esteem and confidence that can come from an ongoing exercise and nutrition program. Bel Inizio (Beautiful Beginning in Italian) was launched to help meet this need. The organization works with women from many partner agencies including Santa Maria Hostel, Dress for Success, Brigid’s Hope, Star of Hope, Redeemed Ministries, and The Women’s Home. Its clients are individuals who had a variety of challenges from sexual abuse, substance and alcohol abuse and homelessness. Most are in recovery, and all are working hard to re-enter the community. With Bel Inizio, many have the opportunity to succeed in a way which they never thought possible: they will set a healthy goal and achieve it. Bel Inizio teams train to complete a 5K, and in the process learn about commitment, fitness, and nutrition. They see healthy behaviors in action and are offered tools to help them succeed once they are out on their own. Bel Inizio shows each woman that they matter. We help prepare them for the ultimate race — the race for a better life. Founder and Executive Director, Theresa Strong, has well over a decade invested in running and nearly that in working to improve conditions for the homeless in Houston. She relies on the kindness of friends, family, and strangers to achieve the mission of Bel Inizio. https://bel-inizio.org/wpNEW/aboutus/ |

Building Student Confidence through Writing
Oct. 06, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Melissa M. Williams Murphy is a children’s author, the founder of the iWRITE Literacy Organization, and the Executive Director of The Bryan Museum. Melissa’s background in psychology has influenced the framework to her writing programs, giving students a voice and giving educators and parents the tools they need to create a positive association with writing. She established iWRITE in 2009, after a year-long book tour where she heard elementary students ask her the same question over and over, “Can kids be authors too?” That question sparked the idea for the I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids Annual Publishing Contest, now in its thirteenth year, giving students the opportunity to become published authors. Melissa has written and published twelve books for children ranging from the K to 6th grade level and presented to students in over 250 schools across Texas. She makes learning fun for kids while still aligning lessons with TEKS standards for Texas education. Her most recent creative writing program and curriculum revolves around the “i” The Guy cartoon character and writing mentor. The mascot appears in numerous iWRITE resources for teachers and students, including writing workbooks in English and Spanish, a Texas History journal, online curriculum, and television programming. Melissa is most excited for her next big project through iWRITE and The Bryan Museum, to publish 1,000 students in the largest published book in the world called, I Am Texas, and break the Guinness World Record in November 2022. She loves spending time with her husband, Matt, and two little boys, Jackson and Colton, in Houston, TX. |

Malachi Destiny and Purpose
Nov. 03, 2022 12:00 p.m.
ABOUT PRINCE COUISNARD Prince Couisnard knows what poverty looks like. He knows what poverty feels like. Prince was born in the projects of Gary, Indiana. He was raised by a strong single mother in a home that included three brothers, three sisters, three extras from the neighborhood and an intense sense of community involvement. He left the inner city with a college scholarship to play baseball at TSU. He went on to play for the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Prince married Sheila Bethel and captured the dream of a middle class life. But that dream didn’t satisfy. The Couisnards felt called by the plight of those that lived in the inner city. They moved to Houston’s Third Ward to reach out to troubled youth and their families. God’s providence was obvious. Prince and Sheila’s heart for Him drew others with the same heart and a ministry was born. The Couisnards started a non-profit ministry, Inner City Youth. Prince pastured a church, First Corinthians 13. Prince and Sheila brought people from Houston’s wealthiest and poorest neighborhoods together and created an athletic discipleship ministry that benefited both the poor and the rich. It was a ministry based on relationships with Christ, relationships with the children and their families, relationships within the diverse communities in Houston. The Inner City Youth ministry collaborated with individuals, organizations, corporations, foundations and churches across the nation to build young leaders. It grew financially from two monthly contributions of $150 to having raised over $14,000,000 in a 14 years. The Couisnards went from having a dream to fulfilling a vision. Inner City Youth is now The Forge for Families. Prince’s new ministry is Malachi Destiny and Purpose. He is also a consultant with Prince Couisnard, Sr. Consultant. |

Born in Mississippi, Jim “Mattress Mack” Mcingvale attended high school in Dallas, TX and was a student at the University of Texas and the University of North Texas where he played football for both schools in 1969-1970 and 1972-1973, respectively. After college, Mack worked at a convenience store where his boss did him a huge favor one day: he fired him. Refreshed and determined, Mack found a job at a furniture store on the other side of town where he diligently worked, absorbing the business practices and trades of the furniture industry. Inspired, he made a decision that would forever change his life and the competitive world of the retail industry: to open up his own furniture store. Mattress Mack now has three Gallery Furniture stores, the original North Freeway, 110,000 square foot location, the largest store on Grand Parkway and the smaller Post Oak store. While Gallery Furniture is well known, Mack’s philanthropy is legendary. In fact, his philanthropy is as contagious as his passion for furniture. His work on special projects has helped to build the first Mobile Stroke Unit in the USA for patients in Houston and when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in August of 2017, Mack opened the doors of Gallery Furniture to those who were seeking shelter from the flood. Most recently, Mack served 3,000+ meals and provided overnight shelter to more than 700 Houstonians at Gallery Furniture who were affected by Winter Storm Uri. When there's a great charitable need, Mack is usually the first to respond, if not spearhead the effort. Anyone who's ever worked for or with Mack knows that he builds his business and performs his acts of charity not for recognition, but to benefit the community at large. Mack has a huge heart and is focused on helping Houston become the greatest city in America. Mack is one of Houston's most recognized citizens and has touched the lives of countless Houstonians in a positive way. |

But like every chapter in the Texas Mattress Makers story, this one ends with a desire to do things better. Having gained first hand experience in nearly every aspect of the furniture business, Youval decided to open his own manufacturing/wholesale bedding company so that he could put his knowledge toward providing a better product. There was just one problem; most suppliers put profits ahead of quality, and only requested lower-quality mattresses that they could sell quickly for an easy buck. Knowing he was capable of making and selling the high-quality product that people deserve at fair prices, Youval decided once again to make it better on his own. So in 2011, Texas Mattress Makers was born in Downtown Houston. Fueled by the desire to deliver better quality mattresses at better prices for our customers, Youval combined his knowledge of mattress manufacturing and sales to create an all-in-one mattress destination where customers could buy directly from the source, guided by the expertise of real-life mattress experts — not pushy salespeople. Since opening in 2011, Texas Mattress Makers has helped thousands of Texans sleep better and spend less, and has grown from our initial factory showroom into multiple locations — all of which offer the same high-quality, handmade products and superior service that made us famous. Their commitment to better sleep at better prices has gotten Texas Mattress Makers some local media love. Youval and his team have become regulars on local news shows on KPRC 2, KHOU 11, and KTRK 13, where they share the latest mattress tips and insights with Houstonians. |
