Founder and Executive Director of Bel Inizio
Sep. 15, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Located in Houston, Texas, Bel Inizio, (which means beautiful beginning in Italian), is a nonprofit that helps disadvantaged women develop self-confidence and life skills through fitness and nutrition. Participants train to complete a 5K, which helps prepare them for the ultimate race — the race for a better life.” Houston has a generous giving community and great compassion for those in need. Bel Inizio has emergency shelters, transitional housing, and half-way houses. The agencies offer case workers, recovery programs, and job skills training. What gets lost, and is critically needed, is helping individuals achieve the self esteem and confidence that can come from an ongoing exercise and nutrition program. Bel Inizio (Beautiful Beginning in Italian) was launched to help meet this need. The organization works with women from many partner agencies including Santa Maria Hostel, Dress for Success, Brigid’s Hope, Star of Hope, Redeemed Ministries, and The Women’s Home. Its clients are individuals who had a variety of challenges from sexual abuse, substance and alcohol abuse and homelessness. Most are in recovery, and all are working hard to re-enter the community. With Bel Inizio, many have the opportunity to succeed in a way which they never thought possible: they will set a healthy goal and achieve it. Bel Inizio teams train to complete a 5K, and in the process learn about commitment, fitness, and nutrition. They see healthy behaviors in action and are offered tools to help them succeed once they are out on their own. Bel Inizio shows each woman that they matter. We help prepare them for the ultimate race — the race for a better life. Founder and Executive Director, Theresa Strong, has well over a decade invested in running and nearly that in working to improve conditions for the homeless in Houston. She relies on the kindness of friends, family, and strangers to achieve the mission of Bel Inizio. https://bel-inizio.org/wpNEW/aboutus/ |

Building Student Confidence through Writing
Oct. 06, 2022 12:00 p.m.
Melissa M. Williams Murphy is a children’s author, the founder of the iWRITE Literacy Organization, and the Executive Director of The Bryan Museum. Melissa’s background in psychology has influenced the framework to her writing programs, giving students a voice and giving educators and parents the tools they need to create a positive association with writing. She established iWRITE in 2009, after a year-long book tour where she heard elementary students ask her the same question over and over, “Can kids be authors too?” That question sparked the idea for the I Write Short Stories by Kids for Kids Annual Publishing Contest, now in its thirteenth year, giving students the opportunity to become published authors. Melissa has written and published twelve books for children ranging from the K to 6th grade level and presented to students in over 250 schools across Texas. She makes learning fun for kids while still aligning lessons with TEKS standards for Texas education. Her most recent creative writing program and curriculum revolves around the “i” The Guy cartoon character and writing mentor. The mascot appears in numerous iWRITE resources for teachers and students, including writing workbooks in English and Spanish, a Texas History journal, online curriculum, and television programming. Melissa is most excited for her next big project through iWRITE and The Bryan Museum, to publish 1,000 students in the largest published book in the world called, I Am Texas, and break the Guinness World Record in November 2022. She loves spending time with her husband, Matt, and two little boys, Jackson and Colton, in Houston, TX. |

Malachi Destiny and Purpose
Nov. 03, 2022 12:00 p.m.
ABOUT PRINCE COUISNARD Prince Couisnard knows what poverty looks like. He knows what poverty feels like. Prince was born in the projects of Gary, Indiana. He was raised by a strong single mother in a home that included three brothers, three sisters, three extras from the neighborhood and an intense sense of community involvement. He left the inner city with a college scholarship to play baseball at TSU. He went on to play for the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Prince married Sheila Bethel and captured the dream of a middle class life. But that dream didn’t satisfy. The Couisnards felt called by the plight of those that lived in the inner city. They moved to Houston’s Third Ward to reach out to troubled youth and their families. God’s providence was obvious. Prince and Sheila’s heart for Him drew others with the same heart and a ministry was born. The Couisnards started a non-profit ministry, Inner City Youth. Prince pastured a church, First Corinthians 13. Prince and Sheila brought people from Houston’s wealthiest and poorest neighborhoods together and created an athletic discipleship ministry that benefited both the poor and the rich. It was a ministry based on relationships with Christ, relationships with the children and their families, relationships within the diverse communities in Houston. The Inner City Youth ministry collaborated with individuals, organizations, corporations, foundations and churches across the nation to build young leaders. It grew financially from two monthly contributions of $150 to having raised over $14,000,000 in a 14 years. The Couisnards went from having a dream to fulfilling a vision. Inner City Youth is now The Forge for Families. Prince’s new ministry is Malachi Destiny and Purpose. He is also a consultant with Prince Couisnard, Sr. Consultant. |
