BSWH Club Project: Clean Water
Jan. 07, 2021 12:00 p.m.
David Fox and Ed Hess will speak about one of our club's main impact areas - Clean Water. Our club celebrates it's 10th year of partnership with Living Waters of the World! Ed has recently taken on the Commercial lead role for the Living Waters of the World (LWW)– Houston Group and is presenting today, along with David Fox (prior Lead), to update the Club on the current projects recently completed in 2019, donations in 2020, and the plans for supporting future projects in 2021. The Bellaire Rotary Club and Houston Churches have worked together for over a decade now and because of their generosity, there were contingency funds available, to keep clean water flowing from the Yucatan Plants through both the Pandemic and the multiple natural disasters that have hit Central America. ABOUT DAVID FOX David was born in Oklahoma and as a young child his family moved to Bellaire, where he was raised in the Bellaire Presbyterian Church. He and his brothers have all settled in Houston, and he and his wife, Joyce, enjoy a large family network. Early on, he developed a passion for choral music and later sang with the Houston Symphony Choir from 1960-1990 and still supports many Choral and Arts groups in Houston. His other passion has always been competitive sailing and he helped crew one of the largest Olympic class boats in many races internationally. David retired in 2003 as a Stock and Bonds Broker (NYSE) having worked most recently for AG Edwards, Inc. for 15 years. Since then, when not sailing or singing, all his focus continues to be on non-profit mission service. It was through John Freeman and Don Beckner that he was introduced to Rotary International’s work and the Bellaire Rotary club. Starting in 2013, he split his time between the Project CURE (international medical mission) and the Living Waters for the World-Houston Group. David continues to be a significant patron for many Houston based non-profit organizations.
Ed retired in 2015 after a long career with Tenneco and Shell as an Exploration Economics Manager and a global expert on Exploration Economics and Decision Analysis. He enjoys camping, traveling, choral singing, and all forms of live music entertainment. Ed and his wife, Janet, enjoy dancing in Texas Dancehalls, and are lifetime members of Texas Dancehall Preservation Inc. With four grandchildren in Austin, he and Janet are back and forth this year caring for and homeschooling grandchildren. Ed is the current President of the Board of Ars Lyrica Houston, a Baroque music organization. He first attended the Living Waters Clean Water U in 2015 and since has enjoyed his current work with the Yucatan LWW Network. Prior to the Pandemic he was driving a truck once a week for Project Cure picking up donations from area hospitals. |

Second Servings
Mar. 11, 2021 12:00 p.m.
Barbara Bronstein, Founder, President & Volunteer at Second Servings, noticed an excessive amount of food being wasted at banquets, as a result of no-shows, so she sought out a donation solution. When Barbara learned that the local food bank did not accept prepared food donations, she connected a soup kitchen directly with numerous banquet venues, to retrieve their surplus food. After a year, Barbara was determined to create a more effective, scalable solution to connect abundance with need. While researching, she became aware of the term “food rescue” and began studying and connecting with a multitude of food rescue organizations around the country. Once she got a better idea of the mission at hand, she chose the best practices for the Houston market, and founded the city’s only prepared and perishable food rescue organization, Second Servings. OPERATIONS OFFICIALLY BEGAN IN EARLY 2015, AND SINCE THEN, WE HAVE RESCUED OVER 5 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD, VALUED AT APPROXIMATELY $50 MILLION, FROM MORE THAN 400 FOOD DONORS AND DELIVERED IT AT NO COST TO OVER 90 LOCAL CHARITIES. |

Leadership through Change
May 27, 2021 12:00 p.m.
ABOUT LISA HELFMAN Lisa Helfman is the Director of Public Affairs Houston for H-E-B Grocery Company and served previously as the Director of Real Estate for them. Prior to joining H-E-B in 2014, Lisa served as Director of Real Estate Services at Texas Children’s Hospital where she created the Real Estate Services Department in order to centralize the hospital’s real estate operations. Lisa worked at Texas Children’s for seven years after leaving Vinson & Elkins law firm where she represented many urban redevelopment clients, non-profits, and government entities in financings, real estate, and other legal matters. Lisa received her JD Magna Cum Laude from the University of Houston Law Center and her BA Cum Laude from Tulane University. When she isn’t representing H-E-B in the community, she is pushing kale smoothies to children all over underserved communities as the Founder and Board Chair of Brighter Bites. In the fall of 2011, Lisa and her family took part in a weekly fruit and vegetable co-op, and she watched her children’s eating habits transform—for the better. So much so that her little boy rejected a piece of cake at a birthday party, asking instead for the blueberries he’d grown fond of eating at home. Like most moms, Lisa realized this was a fairly significant decision for a six-year-old, and she wondered what kind of influence regular access to fresh produce might have on all children. She was inspired to replicate this type of positive change in underserved communities identified as “food deserts,” or areas with limited access to grocery stores. Because nutrition education in these communities is often equally lacking, Lisa’s vision was to bring a produce co-op to schools in these neighborhoods that included an educational component while also making it fun. She created a collaborative partnership with Dr. Shreela Sharma at the University of Texas School of Public Health, and launched the program now known as Brighter Bites in 2012. Eight years later, Brighter Bites has delivered over 40,000,000 pounds of fresh produce and 100,000s of education materials to more than 400,000 individuals (including teachers!) across 125+ participating schools in Houston, Dallas, Austin, New York City, Washington D.C., Northern California, and Southwest Florida. In 2019, the Houston-Galveston chapter of the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship named Lisa its Humanitarian of the Year, Newcomb College at Tulane University also named Lisa its Community Service Alumni of the Year and Business Insider named her and Shreela to their list of top 100 Coolest People in Food and Drink. In 2020, her alma mater Kinkaid named Lisa the Alumna of the Year. In addition to chairing the Board of Brighter Bites, Lisa also serves on the boards of the Jung Center, the Houston Food Bank, the YMCA of Greater Houston and Buffalo Bayou Partnership. She has two children, Drew (15) and Nathan (12), who continue to inspire her every day. |
