Joe Hertig-Rotarian of the Year

What better way to celebrate Rotary Membership month than to give our 2020 Rotarian of the Year Award to a guy who brings passion to all he does within and outside of Rotary. Joe Hertig's passion is service and he is an example to all of us about what is possible when serving others comes before self. Joe says “a person joins Rotary for their reasons and stays for the right reasons." He makes service fun! Thanks Joe for all you do for our club, for the kids and for our community! Congratulations!!dd text here

Hiawatha Trail Outing

Last Saturday was a beautiful day to bike the Hiawatha Trail.   No smoke-blue skies and NEW BIKES for the kids.   Thanks to the Missoula Rotary foundation and individual Sunrise Rotary members, so each child could have a new bike.   You will remember that these bikes were part of the July project where 200+ bikes were assembled and delivered to children on Montana Reservations.    Thank you also to our Rotarian, Joe Hertig, for heading up this special day!

Travelers Rest Outing Aug 2020

We spent a beautiful summer morning with the Sunrise and Gallager homes at Travelers Rest    We heard about the Native Americans that  lived and traded in the area as well as the travels of Lewis and Clark.   Our guides split us into 2 groups.  One group played warrior games and one took the tour thru the area; stopping and learning about Lewis & Clark's campsite.   It seems that running and yelling is a hunting game-the kids were naturals.  Being good at  running and yelling is very useful when herding deer toward your hunting party.
We capped off the morning with a wonderful lunch prepared by Sandy and Farmer's State Bank.

Rusty's Ride: A Successful Tribute to Our Fellow Rotarian

Posted by Lou Bahin on Sep 21, 2014

John Dolinsek is happy to report that he successfully completed the Ovando Gran Fondo (AKA Rusty’s Ride) - a 55 mile benefit mountain bike ride  in 6.5 hours.  Rusty was waiting for John at the finish line. Four months ago Rusty and John agreed that they both would meet at the finish line.  It happened, and it was an awesome, emotional experience.

In John's words: "The 55 mile route traveled through private ranches and isolated back country roads with spectacular scenery. Many riders carried bear spray but no sightings were reported other than one Bull Moose. No spray for me as I felt my odds with 250 riders were good! I did have a deer shoot across the trail ahead of me very frightened but luckily no bear or lion was in pursuit!

The day was motivating, difficult at times, inspiring and very satisfying knowing that I raised the most amount of money ever raised by an individual rider ($15,300) in honor of my good friend, Rotarian, Symphony supporter , fly fishing mentor & partner. Without the support of The Missoula Sunrise Rotary club board and Rusty’s friends in your club this never would have been so successful. Four months of training, 15 pounds weight loss & asking for financial support was well worth it!  Service Above Self.

Riding for Rusty

Posted on Jun 02, 2014

On Saturday, September 20,  John Dolinsek will participate in the third annual Ovando Gran Fondo bike ride:

"I am riding to honor and pay tribute to your member and my dear friend Russ Lockner.  All proceeds donated to the Missoula Symphony on my behalf will be listed in honor of Rusty."

For more information about how you can support John's tribute to Rusty, please visit his page.

Our club is supporting John's ride, too: what better way to honor our fellow Rotarian than to show our support for the Missoula Symphony, with Rusty and Susan its most loyal advocates for many years.

Pledge – Bill Sawyer

Invocation – Margaret Burns

Guests – Jerry Rogge, guest of Rusty,  Mark Porter, guest of Margo Belden

We started our meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance by Bill Sawyer and an invocation by Margaret Burns.  Guests were introduced by Curt - Jerry Rogge, guest of Rusty,  Mark Porter, guest of Margo Belden and our speaker/s, Mary Sexton from the Crown of the Continent Round-Table as well as Justine Flynn a certified musical thanatologist.

Happy Bucks included Anne Guest thanking the snow heavens for opening up and dumping 20 inches of new snow on Lookout and the ski-lift operator for opening 45 minutes early.  Dick King was happy to share some information on MCT and the possibility of exploring an RI Global Grant with the group. Matt Doucette was happy for a ski/snowboard day at Discovery. Jennifer Straughan was happy to see the Hellgate swim team take state in Butte, America. Margo Belden was happy to be in Hawaii while Montana was a frosty 30 degrees.

Announcements started with Glenn Marangelo telling the club about finding a (new) home for the bugs that reside in his home. To help in the funding, a carpenter from Merrill Bradshaw Carpentry in Arlee built a coffee table and the Missoula Insectarium group decided to auction the table off. Tickets are $50, 40 tickets are available and only about 20 were sold as of Wednesday. Contact Glenn for further info.

Carl introduced Mary Sexton from the Crown of the Continent Roundtable. Mary let us know about the Round Table and how the Crown of the Continent encompassed 18MM acres from Waterton (Glacier) to the Blackfoot Valley.  The Roundtable gathers to connect people with a focus on enhancing culture, community and conservation. Mary will be back at our club in the next couple of months to explain the Roundtable in more details. For more info visit

Induction – We are happy to announce, Gayle Gifford, CEO of the Montana Food Bank Network, has been inducted as of Wednesday. Please welcome and extend the hand of Rotary to our newest Missoula Sunrise member!! Congratulations Gayle!

Our Speaker for the morning was Justine Flynn, a musical thanatologist with Partners Hospice. Justine provided a sample of her “prescriptive music” which helps grief, loss, chronic pain, anxiety, depression and other various symptoms of life. She explained what prescriptive music is, from analyzing breathing and creating melodies that match rhythmic breathing, to soothing pain. She told us she is not a musical therapist, as a musical therapist brings in music and tunes to help revive memories of life events. Music Thanatology is more creating music to help individuals cope with medical crisis and/or families grief over the death of a loved one. If you want to learn more about musical thanatology, there is a book by Jennifer Hollis, “Music at the End of Life, Easing the Pain and Preparing the Passage”.

Meeting ended with the 4-way test.

Accomplishments can be for extraordinary club service, as well as notable efforts outside of club duties, such as community service and professional achievements. All nominees should be in good standing with the club.

Burchenal Ranch Outing- Saturday Sept 29th!

Posted by Bob Clay on Sep 25, 2012
Options are to:

1) Meet at the Park & Ride off of East Broadway at 9:30 AM to carpool (on Broadway east of Van Buren St).

2) Drive to the ranch yourself. It is about a 1 hour drive from Missoula.  The directions are:

Take Highway 200 to Ovando and turn left on Monture Creek Road (directly opposite the road into Ovando).  If you come to Trixi's Antler Saloon you've gone too far (don't worry about a multitude of roads to confuse your choice, Monture Creek Rd is the only option).

Go around 4.5 miles on Monture Creek Rd (north towards to mountains).  After coming down a long grade and then the road bending right, look left for a house with barns, horses and equipment.  This is our ranch, turn in left at the entrance (if you suddenly come to a large hay field, you've gone too far).

Following the road past the house and barns (very slowly please! the dust is terrible), it will bend right, cross a stream and then bend left.  The lodge is a few hundred yards on the left, park with the other cars and come on in.

Missoula Sunrise Rotary Celebrates 20 Years!

Posted by Adele Gibbs

Missoula Sunrise Rotary celebrated its 20-year anniversary on June 24, 2009 with an entertaining and enjoyable social at the Hilton Garden Inn.  Outgoing President Chris Warden served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.  The program provided Missoula Sunrise Rotarians with an opportunity for fellowship, celebration and funny stories as we remembered our 20 years of serving the Missoula community.

Dictionaries for Third Graders!

Posted by Julie McFarland

Each year Rotarians around the country prepare millions of dictionaries to distribute  to 3rd Graders.  In 2008, 2,417,994 books were delivered to 3rd grade classrooms around the country.  Missoula Rotary Clubs are proud to be a part of this effort to create better readers, spellers and writers in their formative years.
