Highly trained and motivated rubber shrimp will mount their inner tubes and take to the water on Saturday, October 8th, as the Sea Island Rotary Club presents the 14th Annual Charity Shrimp Race in conjunction with the Beaufort Shrimp Festival. The principal goal of this event is to raise money for our local charities.

The Sea Island Rotary Club Shrimp Race is the primary annual fundraiser for our club. The proceeds from the Shrimp Race will directly impact our community by funding several projects including the Sea Island Rotary Smile Mobile, our mobile dental clinic that helps the under-served population of Beaufort and Jasper counties.  The goal of the Smile Mobile is to relieve the pain and suffering associated with ongoing dental problems; problems that can keep adults out of work, or children out of school.  Proceeds also help fund ‘Outfitting Lowcountry’s Youth School Uniform Project’ and the Sea Island Rotary Scholarship programs for graduating high school seniors from three of our local schools.

The Shrimp Race is fun to watch for both children and adults. It is held at the Henry Chambers Waterfront Park during the Beaufort Shrimp Festival. It will begin around 2:30 PM when 5,000 rubber shrimp wearing inner tubes are released from the nets of a local shrimp trawler and into the Beaufort River. The shrimp float along with the tide to the finish line.

The shrimp have been training all summer and are anxiously awaiting the chance at being the first to cross the finish line!  The winning shrimp wins $2,000, 2nd place wins $1,000, 3rd place wins $750, 4th place wins $500, 5th place wins $250 and 6th through 10th place each win $100. The first 100 shrimp that cross the finish line have a chance to win the $30,000 Grand Prize.
