PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Ross Newkirk spoke to the members about the Caborca trip to Meixco from February. He outlined the location of Caborca near the Sea of Cortez and how the project came about through the efforts of Hubert Singh on a visit to Nogales, Mexico on another project. He talked at length about the region and its needs with little to no public health; costly transportation network that prevents many in the area from having the mobility to get to health care facilities. Our club and six others from the district participated for the first time in 2017 in the immunization of children for polio. The local club of 24 members are very active and encouraged our members to assist with purchasing equipment for the regional hospital cafeteria to help out families bringing their young children to the neo-natel unit. The $10,000 donate helped to supply not only equipment to store and cook but also food for these families. On the 2018 trip; our members were asked to help with a water supply upgrade to a desalinization system for the village and elementary school, as well as, a literacy project to provide suitable age books to the school by creating a reading centre. This project was the one selected for this year over the water project since that needed more research to continue forward. A grant of $60,000 is needed and the eleven clubs that participated this year from our region all wished to help. Russ presented Hubert with a bottle of the local product for his efforts at making this project fly. Dave thanked Russ and Hubert for their contributions today.
Dave reminded everyone about the KidsAbility Fun Day on June 9th and to go to the sign up. He also spoke to the Hosting Event at the RI conference which is being hosted by John Webster's company and to contact him if you wish to attend as there is limited space. Lastly, he reminded members to support the Dream Home Draw by Kitchener Conestoga club and their need for ticket sellers.
