Announcements

Cheryl Ewing informed the members that In Vino is coming soon and there was a need  for more Silent Auction items. The items need to be in by April 10 so that they can be included in the printed list.

Recognition

President David Chatson choose Jim Brown as the Bell Ringer today for hosting “Wine and Carrots” where 27 bottles of wine were contributed to the Wheel Barrow. Eight more bottles were contributed at today’s meeting resulting in the need for 20 more bottles to create a load that compares with last year’s wheel barrow which sold for $2000.

Wayne Boehler, Adrian De Coo, Tom Mennill, and Bill Proctor were winners in the wine draw.

Program

Our speaker today was Catherine Garacho, the 2017-18 recipient of the Rotary MPACS Scholarship which was initiated by our club. She is currently enrolled in the Master of Peace and Conflict Studies at Conrad Grebel University College and is hoping to eventually earn a Law Degree in human rights. As of tomorrow she will be returning for four months to Zimbabwe, her home country, where she will be interning as she works with street children.

Catherine provided us with a history lesson about her country over the past 30 years as it evolved from a prosperous and civil society to a poor and conflicted society. She wants to be educated and trained so that she can contribute to developing peace by helping the people learn how to resolve conflicts in healthy ways.

Rotary Peace Centre Report

Ernie Ginsler reported on the work he has been leading re the establishment of a Rotary Peace Centre at the U of W. The bad news is that it won’t be happening as Rotary International has decided that the next several centres will be established in Africa, South America and Asia.

The good news is that the progress on developing a Peace and Conflict Resolution program at U of W has attracted other faculties who have requested to join. As a result Ernie is confident that a nationally and eventually a globally recognized Peace and Conflict Resolution program will develop. He did alert us that the success of the endeavour will need to gather in Millions of dollars to make it happen. Maybe this is where Rotary can help make it happen?
